GM from Cape Cod, All the traders jumped off the train yesterday. 100% cash. It was like the grinch who stole Christmas. | GM Phil. Maybe the grinch came too early, and good for the potential Santa Claus Rebound. |
No interest in buying anything today | live answered |
GM everyone ! | GM Antonio! |
I heard it....Good Morning! | Hi AW, GM! |
This must not be Thursday | Ha! |
Justin - enjoyed your interview with Kathy Donnelly. | Thanks, Rudolph! She's great and excited to have her colleague Eve Boboch on IBD Live tomorrow. |
Good Morning Team | GM Michael |
Arnie, if you know, what is the opposite of "giddy"? | Grounded ...LOL |
Gotta clean up the watchlists lol | Ha ha, yes, and alerts need resetting? |
Good morning IBD Live! Could anyone share a few books they like about the mental side of trading? I know a few of you have mentioned a few in the past, I just don't recall what they were. Thanks! | Bill's books are always a first, including "The Successful Investor" and of course HTMMIS. For more active traders, check out Jared Tendler, a mental coach whom Justin and I interviewed. Trading in the Zone by Mark Douglas. Mark Minervini's books are excellent. The original Market Wizards. Gerald Loeb, The Battle for Investment Survival. And finally, Edwin Lefevre, Reminiscences of a Stock Operator, true classic. Hope this helps, Mark! Hatman |
Brutal selling | True. And Webby's point on the sell-offs in Jan 2000 and Feb 2000 is very apt. |
I am sure everyone is second guessing their decision on positions going into the Fed meeting yesterday. Strong recommendation for "How to Decide: Simple Tools for Marking Better Choices" by Annie Duke. Even better than her other book, "Thinking in Bets." Super helpful to making better decisions and learning from experience without biases. |
Thanks, Tim! I haven't read that one and I loved here book "Thinking In Bets." It's like it was written for trading. |
I see a bug in all the charts…yesterdays range is showing as today | Hey Don, yes this has been reported and the engineers are working on this bug. Thanks so much for your patience |
It looks like there is a glitch in MS on yesterdays bar on some stocks, anyone else notice this ? | Hi Phil, |
with that brasil ETF, could it affect ERJ? | EWZ is the Brazil ETF |
Where is long term leaders list located? | We have a link at investors.com/LiveFAQ |
Why are the price bars blue and the volume bars red? | It's a pre-market bug that the engineers are working on. Thanks for your patience! |
I like the change on Marketsurge for yesterday's bar turning blue lol, its like yesterday never happened | LOL it's a bug and our engineers are on it. Thanks for your patience! |
Good morning. Was yesterday's action a possible vertical violation? | It could be the first day. Let's see what happens the next three days. |
I think it would be helpful if the panel discussed how much and how fast they cut back on their portfolio yesterday....or held. | Absolutely |
I think Ed sleeps less than I do. | He actually goes to be quite early. |
I assume Webby was out of UPRO by 2:05 ET. | I know I was. |
How will the coming govt shutdown impact the market? | Hard to say. If it's short, no big deal. If it goes on for a while, then you might have yields rise. |
why there's a santa rally? | A few reasons - but one reason is that people are waiting until new year to sell for tax reasons. So, buyers but fewer sellers. |
look at UBER please? Up on a down day… | Yes, but it's beaten-down hard and is at the mercy of robotaxi news/rumors from Waymo/Tesla. Needs to regain its 50-day/200-day lines |
DECK Leader Acting well. | live answered |
Do you know the market school count? | Exposure is now 2. |
What do you think about CAVA here ? | I sold the remainder of my position yesterday. |
Ali, Are you holding any CAVA at this point? | Closed out the rest of my position yesterday |
How was Crypto affected? | Bitcoin sold off - and briefly kept falling Wed. night - but it's rebounded today somewhat |
I protected my year. | Well done. |
Chris: how do you track premarket prices on your watchlists? | I put them into a watch list in ThinkOrSwim. Use the Mark % Change. We will be adding premarket and after market price changes to the MarketSurge stock lists. |
Mike is the house.. | Well in the hotel;) |
That make sense Webby | Thanks |
Can we please glance over Mike's regression channels? | I'll go over those on tomorrow's show and the SMT...traveling right now and having some PC issues so can't bring it up to share right now...SPY broke badly yesterday. Nasdaq is a much different position |
Mike is in the house.. | ;) |
Mike you said you were getting NVDA yesterday in pre-market I believe. Did you get out by end of day or stay in? | Yes I sold almost all of it yesterday...sold the rest this morning...IMO we need either time or power for the market to be okay again... |
Webby, would your regression channels need to be modifed now w yesterdays action? | SPY is broken from a regression standpoint. QQQ and Nasdaq are still in their lines |
Is it a good time to use inverse etfs for individual stocks like GOOGL and NVDA? | That's what I'm doing for NVDA. I sold GOOGL since I had only a modest gain on it. |
Webby, would you agree given yesterday's break of $IWM, $SPY below 50 SMA and $QQQ below 21 EMA this is a risk off environment? What do you want to see before you start to get involved again in this market. Would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks Mike |
Tom, I'll be back on tomorrow morning...we need time...could just be a day or two...or a few weeks+ the simplest way to look at it would be the low being above the 21 ema on Nasdaq, QQQ and or SPY |
Any insights about the announcement the CEO of NVDA will be making on Jan 6th? | No - it could be a relative nothing burger with a few vague partnerships, or we could see big alliances, preannouncements on Q4 revenue and guidance for 2025. |
Where Is Kathy's recording podcast on line ? | search YouTube for investor's business daily |
These weekly podcasts from Justin are fantastic source of knwoledge! | Yes! |
I could not find the podcast from Kathy Donnelly last night. I have not been able to find these type of webcasts when you have them. | https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5fZv7bPcF5j2RsfO-9OiLA |
Appreciate your response Webby. Look forward to hearing more tomorrow when you are back on. | No problem Tom |
Ali mentioned the email send to IBD live subscribers each day after the close. I have not received any daily emails following ibd live and calling subscriber service didn't help. the person I spoke with didn;t know anything about it. Please advise |
all IBD Live subscribers should be on the email list for our daily IBD Live recap newsletter. Ask to speak with Bridget Francis and say Ali sent you |
Regarding leveraged ETFs, does that mean we should trade 'em like a day trader, holding only 2-3 days? Or a day trader? I get it that it's not a buy-and-hold vehicle, but I could use some guidance on how long it should be held. Thanks for all you guys do. |
I hold as long as I believe I'm in an uptrend. Once I feel we are in a sideways trend or downtrend, I'm out. Maybe take a look at Vibha Jha's recent appearance. She does some large positions in TQQQ and gave her rules for buying, holding and selling. |
you don't need thjose drugs just fast | live answered |
i did a 40 hour fast monday | 40 hours? Wow, that's very impressive. Just water and tea or coffee, Phil? |
what is the team's thoughts on the amazing sell off in the rail roads? Check NSC, UNP, CSX .. just day after day of breaking down .. | We don't like holding stocks with that kind of damage |
Is AVGO still in an OK position | Think so. Despite three down days, still holding the positive earnings gap, and above the 217.58 alternate entry created by the 12/13 gap-up. Here's an Investor's Corner on breakaway gaps. https://www.investors.com/how-to-invest/investors-corner/breakaway-gap-the-art-of-the-breakout/ |
If you want to see a train wreck, check out SEZL. Muddy Waters reported that they initiated a short position. | Wow, you're right Leslie. Thanks for sharing that news. Sliced right through the 50-day MA. |
how about Ollies and RACE | OLLI clearly a leader now. RACE is basing, but fierce selling on a rise back up to the 50-day line may produce a new short sale entry. |
Any thoughts if the Santa Rally is still in the play, or off the table? | Hi Kulwant, one perspective. Check out RSP. At the lows, it's already pulled back 7.7% off its high. That's a significant pullback, and another leg down places the average S&P 500 stock in an intermediate correction. |
Yes of course but what does it say about the broader economy? | Hi John; I agree w/ observers who agree w/ the Fed that monetary policy remains restrictive. The opportunity to reduce rates a little more is good for consumers. But the market is now facing a new test of inflation expectations and the Fed's goal in reaching its long-term goal of 2%. |
When NVDA starts acting normal that may be a sign | If NVDA stays in a base, that would be swell for the techs. |
HatMan, was flying high. Yw :-) | Indeed, Leslie, SEZL 'sezzled' so much it even caught my attn among meme-type names! :-) |
COST | Hi George! Hope all's well, happy holidays. Remains a position in Leaderboard, and it would be great to see it hug that 21-day EMA. |
How is leaderboard handling yesterday's action?Time to be cautions Hatman? | Hi Lekhnath, certainly raising some cash is justified. Recent buys, such as CRWD, PODD, OWL, have been challenging. Market appears more concerned about the Fed and interest rates now as opposed hope for Trump 2.0 moves to boost the economy via deregulation and greater efficiency. Fiscal policy will be a big focus in 2025, IMHO. |
So much for the Trump bump. | For now, agree. Keep an eye on the 10-year, rising sharply and ready to instill discipline in Congress? |
not a buy, but looking at XME metals, such a huge downturn. support perhaps 13 straight days down | Strong dollar and weak China aren't a good combination for metals. |
how about micron (mu)? worth staying aftewr earnings? | This was a laggard that we would not have been trading heading into earnings. It's definitely a sell here per our rules. |
How about how Mike handled his 40% position in UPRO? Be interested to see how he unwound it and did he take damage, or get out w/minimal to no damage? | Had to sell it...I'd do that same trade again |
Has Mike documented his A-to-F rating criteria? | Check the FAQ page — I believe there's an article about how to grade stocks |
Ali could you pease writ out how to get to Mike write up & video? Thank You | https://www.investors.com/how-to-invest/investors-corner/how-to-trade-stocks-execute-a-solid-trading-plan-letter-grade-system/ |
Thanks Mike Webster and I am doing just that running through the portfolio and figuring out what to weed out of the garden so to speak and concentrate on the healthy plants | Good for you John |

Thank you so much for this feedback, Tim |
I want to complement the team today such good and thoughtful advice on how to handle such a strong sell off. Really appreciate all of you. | Thank you very much for your feedback, John |
Lighning Round - PLTR ? | I own it, full disclosure. Looks like a hold here. Still waiting for it to digest more before a new entry develops |
There will be better days ahead, it's just not yesterday or probably the next couple weeks. I gotta believe that or it gets pretty dark | there will be better days ahead no doubt! |
Thank you for all the education and calm approach you provide every day! | Thanks, Liza! |
Making gingerbread cookies and shaking boxes under the tree….sold to the sleeping point….protected the year….and a good one at that 👍TY for a great show! | Excellent! Well done Lief! |
