Former Arsenal and West Ham United striker Ian Wright has criticised Hammers defender Thilo Kehrer following their defeat to Everton on Sunday.
The Hammers fell to their fifth league loss in just seven Premier League matches this season after Neal Maupay’s second half goal was enough for a 1-0 victory for Frank Lampard’s goal.
Analysing the match and Match of the Day 2 on Sunday night, Wright, whose professional career saw him spend a year with West Ham, seven with Arsenal, and six with Crystal Palace, felt that German defender Kehrer was at fault for not closing down Maupay quickly enough before he turned and shot after Alex Iwobi’s pass.

“If you are going to stand off somebody who the ball has popped up to, look at Kehrer here,” Wright said on Match of the Day 2. "Once this ball comes in, he’s [Alex Iwobi] fizzed it into him [Maupay].
“At some stage, he [Kehrer] has got to go and engage that. He’s got to be coming, he stops. Look at the goal, it’s a great finish because he’s got to hit the target, but you’re not meant to get that much time.
“You’ve got to give him credit because he has taken advantage of that, but David Moyes can’t be happy seeing that, a defender stopping and putting his arms behind himself and then not going out and challenging him.”
