Ian Wright reveals brilliant Brian Clough story which sums up Nottingham Forest legend

Former Arsenal and Crystal Palace striker Ian Wright has shared a memory of Nottingham Forest hero Brian Clough, during his time at the City Ground.

Clough wrote his name into Forest history by leading the club to one League title and two European cups during his 18 years in charge.

There are many stories around the manager’s time in charge of Forest, with Wright recalling one memory of Clough during a game early in the striker’s career when he was at Crystal Palace.

“Did I tell you what Brian Clough done to us at [Crystal] Palace?” he asked on a clip from Wrighty’s House podcast.

“So we’re playing [Nottingham] Forest and I think they’re beating us. It was early Des Walker and that young team.

“Des Walker and all those guys when they were flying. And they were beating us maybe three or four one.

“We were second division at the time, it might have been a cup game or something, but I remember just seeing a load of commotion on the side of the pitch. Like I see Steve Coppell being very animated.

“And it’s Brian Clough just sitting there and I see Steve Coppell gesticulating at everything.

“He took a substitute off and he didn’t put one on.

“And when we came off we were like ‘what’s his problem, what’s wrong with him?’ He took a sub off and he didn’t put one on.

“When we came in, and he said it, I just laughed and it just made me laugh, because only Brian Clough.”

The clip was shared on Wright’s Twitter account along with the caption: “ONLY Brian Clough!!!!” With four laughing emojis.

Clough took charge of 226 games during his time at the City Ground, winning 91 of the matches and forever being associated with the club.
