Ian Wright instantly dismisses "silly" Liverpool belief after win over Man City

Ian Wright believes that "there's no way that Liverpool aren't going to do something" this season after their confidence-boosting win over Manchester City.

Mohamed Salah struck 14 minutes from time to secure a 1-0 win for the Reds at a raucous Anfield on Sunday, with the victory quietening plenty of critics after a below-par start to the season.

The Reds, who finished just one point behind City last season, are still six points outside the top four, 10 behind City and 14 adrift of leaders Arsenal, although they have a game in hand on the top two.

Wright says anyone who has written Liverpool off this season is "silly", and is backing Jurgen Klopp's side to haul themselves back into contention near the top of the table.

"People writing off Liverpool and saying, ‘the title is out of it’, maybe that is the case, but there’s no way that Liverpool aren’t going to do something," Wright told Premier League Productions.

"They have too many good players. The manager is brilliant. I think that’s a significant win for them.

"It has to be for Liverpool (aiming for the top four). It has to be. I still look at it now, and see the way Liverpool performed in that game, they can get on a run.

"You can’t see Liverpool not being in the top four. I thought it was silly for people saying, ‘oh, people are out of it now. Klopp’s going to have to build and transition’.

"Well, we saw what they could do to Man City there. A very good Man City side."

The Reds welcome West Ham to Anfield on Wednesday evening, and with neither Arsenal or Manchester City in Premier League action this week they have a chance to gain some ground on the top two.

After the City game goalscorer Salah outlined the task that lies ahead of them though, with the Reds having won just three of their nine Premier League games this season.

"We’re still far away from that (a title challenge)," he told Sky Sports.

"We just need to focus on each game and take one game at a time. We don’t have to think about the title at the moment.

"Personally, I love to play always for a title, it’s in my head we’re going to fight for it. But we just need to focus more and take one game at a time, we don’t have to feel more pressure that there is still a gap between us and the first and the second.

"Of course, we’re going to [try to] play for the title. You can see the team is unbelievable, the club, everybody here; we should be in a better position than where we are now.

"The players are excited to win again and I think that gives us a good push for the next games."
