Ian Wright and Paul Scholes disagree on which player Frank Lampard must play to keep Chelsea job

Ian Wright and Paul Scholes have named the two players who they believe will give Frank Lampard a chance to stay at Chelsea on a permanent basis. The 44-year-old was appointed caretaker boss on Thursday afternoon while Todd Boehly continues the Blues' search for a new head coach.

Julian Nagelsmann, Luis Enrique and Carlo Ancelotti are among several managers who have been heavily linked with a move to Stamford Bridge in the summer. Despite the challenges which Lampard will face in the coming weeks, Scholes backed the former Everton boss to succeed, highlighting the return of N'Golo Kante as a much welcomed boost.

The France international has recently returned from a hamstring injury which he suffered in August under Thomas Tuchel. Speaking on BT Sport, former Manchester United midfielder Scholes said: "I was a bit surprised [by Lampard’s return], especially with the way it ended at Chelsea.

"His Everton time didn’t go great but you can’t blame Frank, he’s got to take this opportunity. There was quite a similar situation with Ole Gunner [Solskjaer]. Ole had a lot more time though to prove himself.

"By the end of the season, they had to give it him whereas now there’s only 10 league games and the Champions League to go, but I think Frank is capable of doing it.

"One thing that’s good for Frank is they have got N’Golo Kante back. He’s only played two games but makes a huge difference to the team. If they can get goals, Chelsea have got a chance."

Wright, however, has admitted that he's worried for Lampard amid the 'turmoil' at Stamford Bridge. Speaking on the Wrighty’s House podcast, the former Arsenal striker said: "I messaged him before his appointment and hopefully we’re going for a drink soon.

"Then I saw Lampard was being linked with the [Chelsea] job and it’s really difficult for me because we’re close. I’m afraid – I just want him to do so well. I’m afraid because it’s not gone too well for him up to this point.

"Derby was okay, the Chelsea job was too good to turn down, then Everton and everything that’s happening there. I’m just worried for a friend. Does this move help him? How does it help him? Is he doing it as a favour? Does he want to get back into management right now?

"It’s turmoil at Chelsea at the moment," Wright added. "I’m very confused and worried about the whole thing. What’s in it for Frank? Has he got enough time to organise these players and has he learnt enough from his last experience at Chelsea and Everton to feel he can get this team in place in the limited time he has?

"I’m hoping that’s why he’s gone back but has he got enough time? I don’t know, and I’m not sure how this benefits him."

Wright continued by naming Aubameyang as the Chelsea star who can help Lampard achieve his targets this season. The 59-year-old said: "The last time Lampard was at Chelsea, I remember him liking Aubameyang.

"He will score the chances Chelsea are creating right now. It feels like it’s set up for Aubameyang to come in. Chelsea could easily still start beating teams.

"If Chelsea start Aubameyang up front with Sterling or Mudryk or Felix – they’ve got so much to choose from – I swear to God, Chelsea can absolutely cook some teams."
