Ian Wright admits Granit Xhaka has proved him wrong after Arsenal midfielder’s flying start to season

Ian Wright has hailed Granit Xhaka for his role in Arsenal’s brilliant start to the season.

The Gunners go into the international break top of the league with six wins from their first seven matches, a world away from the situation a year ago when the campaign began with three straight defeats.

Xhaka has played all but two minutes in the Premier League this season, chipping in with a goal and three assists as he has relished the increased freedom of his role in midfield for Mikel Arteta’s side.

The 29-year-old captained Arsenal in their comfortable win over Brentford and was once again impressive, ensuring the Gunners went into the two-week break on a high.

Reflecting on Xhaka’s recent displays, Arsenal legend Wright was full of praise and admitted the midfielder has proved him wrong with the level and consistency of his performances.

“For me, Granit Xhaka is a player that we’re finally see play like he does for Switzerland,” Wright said on Match of the Day.

“He’s playing in a position that suits him, playing more offensively. He’s playing with real authority and confidence.

“Lately he’s been able to find space and from there he can be really dangerous because, for me, he’s got easily one of the best left-foots in the Premier League.

“It’s a great cross for the Jesus goal, it’s fantastic. He can also do the defensive stuff, he gets back and get his foot in there.

“He set the tempo for Arsenal off the ball. I’m really pleased for him because I was one of his staunchest critics. But now we’re seeing the best of Granit Xhaka.”
