Ian Burchnall responds after Notts County head coach linked with Peterborough United job

Notts County head coach Ian Burchnall has told fans to "save their money" after he was linked to the Peterborough United job.

Bookmakers have priced the Magpies boss at 20/1 to take the role at London Road where Posh are looking for a successor to Darren Ferguson who quit on Sunday.

Burchnall has done a terrific job at Notts since taking charge last March and is on course to lead them to another crack at promotion back to the Football League after missing out in the play-offs last season.

He has fast developed a reputation for producing an attractive brand of football which led Halifax boss Pete Wild to admit that the Magpies are one of the best footballing sides in the National League.

Posh are drawing up a shortlist of contenders with former Peterborough boss Grant McCann is currently the bookies' favourite to return for a second time following his exit from Hull.

He is closely followed by Lee Johnson who is available after leaving Sunderland.

Burchnall's odds put him above Lincoln manager Michael Appleton and former Celtic boss Neil Lennon, but the former Ostersunds coach has played down links to Posh who are currently in a Championship relegation fight.

"That's the first I've heard about it but save your money," he joked.

"I don't pay it too much attention, but if that's a link that's there, it's presumably because people think that something you're doing there is good and it is correct.

"I just work hard every day, enjoy my work and do my best. That's all I do. And then if I end up on the bookies' odds, then that's probably good for the bookies."

It is the second job that Burchnall has been linked to in the last week having appeared among the contenders to take charge at Bradford City after the departure of Derek Adams.

But the Notts boss says while it is flattering to be recognised for the job he is doing at Meadow Lane, he says it is more important what the Magpies' owners, the players and staff think about his work.

"The most important thing is that the owners here think I do a good job and that the players like the work that I do, and the staff do too.

"Of course, it's nice if people think that you're doing a good job, and the work that you're doing is recognised - that's always great.

"But the most important people are those closest around the club and that they think that. Hopefully, they do."
