'I would love him to stay' - Eddie Howe opens up on contract offer to Newcastle United midfielder

Sean Longstaff has a contract offer on the table at Newcastle United and Eddie Howe has indicated he wants him to sign it. The midfielder is another player who will see his contract expire at the end of the current campaign.

Negotiations have been ongoing for Longstaff with the player now a regular first-team player after over 80 senior appearances since making his debut in late 2018. Howe has spoken of his admiration for Longstaff but admits his team selections may not have supported that of late.

Howe told Chronicle Live: "I love Sean, but I maybe haven’t displayed that with my team selections. That's only because it is a really strong area of the team, Bruno is not playing either.

"I really do rate him highly and I am desperate for him to get an opportunity and show everyone on a consistent basis what he can do because he's a top player. I would love him to stay and there is no part of me that wants to see him leave and I believe he has a long-term future here."

Howe, though, said it was also up to the player: "That is Sean's decision as well."

When asked if there was a deal on the table for Longstaff, previously linked with Manchester United and Everton, Howe said: "Yeah, from my side, every part of me wants him to stay."
