'I would have left' - Kylian Mbappe provides fresh update on PSG future as Liverpool watch on

Kylian Mbappe has admitted Paris Saint-Germain's performance in this season's Champions League will have no bearing on his future at the club

The 24-year-old will be looking to help his current employers into the quarter-finals of Europe's elite competition this evening as PSG look to overturn a one-goal deficit against Bayern Munich, who are the firm favourites to progress after dominating the first leg in the French capital.

PSG, similarly to Manchester City, have come up short in recent years in their efforts to secure a first-ever Champions League crown despite boasting an unrivalled forward line of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Mbappe.

A player of Mbappe's calibre will undoubtedly be desperate to win the Champions League during his career and could be tempted to leave PSG should the Ligue 1 leaders continue to come up short. The 2022 World Cup finalist has been linked with Liverpool and other major European clubs in recent times, but the France international has made clear tonight's result will not dictate whether he pursues a new challenge.

"If I linked my future to the Champions League, without wishing to show a lack of respect to the club, I would have left a long time ago," he explained ahead of tonight's match at the Allianz Arena. "I don't think this match will have an impact. I am here and I am very happy to be here. I am not thinking about anything other than making PSG successful."

Mbappe has previously confirmed he held discussions with the Reds prior to putting pen to paper on a new contract in Paris ahead of the 2022/23 season, telling the Telegraph in May: “We talked a little bit, but not too much. We talked a little bit."

Last summer is not the first time he has been a player in high demand, however, with clubs also circling for his signature in 2017 after emerging as a breakout star at AS Monaco. It was PSG who won the race in the end, initially signing the forward on loan becoming make this permanent, beating off outside interest from a number of other clubs. Liverpool were again in the running on this occasion, which led to a meeting between Mbappe and Liverpool in Monaco as discussions were held.

“I talked to Liverpool because it’s the favourite club of my mum, my mum loves Liverpool. I don’t know why, you will have to ask her! “It’s a good club and we met them five years ago. When I was in Monaco I met them. It’s a big club," revealed the PSG star.
