'I would be lying' - Furious Ryan Mason makes 'impossible' Liverpool claim after Tottenham defeat

Fuming Ryan Mason believes Liverpool didn’t earn their dramatic victory against his Tottenham Hotspur side.

Diogo Jota capitalised on a poor mistake from Lucas Moura to strike in the fourth minute of injury time as the Reds secured a remarkable 4-3 Premier League win at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.

Liverpool had raced into a 3-0 lead inside the first 15 minutes with goals from Curtis Jones, Luis Diaz and a Mohamed Salah penalty.

But after Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min pulled goals back, former Everton forward Richarlison thought he had secured a point for the visitors when equalising in the 93rd minute.

And Tottenham caretaker boss Mason reckons Liverpool were gifted the victory.

“It’s hard to put into words what happened, to be perfectly honest,” he said. “When we equalised it was fully deserved, so to give them the winner at the end is impossible to take at this moment in time.

“It’s hard to think of any positives. With the ball we are an exceptional team and can score goals and hurt any team. But you don’t win games of football just with the ball.

“When you literally give the opposition four goals without them having to earn it, it makes it difficult. At the same time, we could have scored more goals.

“I felt we were the better team overall creating opportunities. Disappointment, anger, there’s so much emotion going through my body and everyone at the moment, not just the players but the staff and I’m sure fans at home.

“The manner in which we conceded the last goal on the back of equalising, it’s hard to put into words. I wouldn’t say we were unlucky to lose, though. We helped Liverpool.”

Of Liverpool racing into their early three-goal lead, Mason added: “I would be lying if I said there wasn’t a bit of fear. To concede three goals in 15 minutes is not a normal situation.

“We have to understand the Premier League is relentless for 95 minutes and if you are not ready for a five or 10-minute spell then the game can get away from you, to go 3-0 down away from home it is nigh-on impossible to win.”
