I work in town: Martin Evans, Piccadilly Records... the best view of the city? 'From the 250 bus heading towards Hulme'

Manchester and music are synonymous. From punk in the 70s, indie in the 80s, Madchester in the 90s, and then the Britpop boom shortly after, each era has brought a distinct soundtrack to life in this great city.

And the best tunes can be found in one of Manchester's finest institutions, Piccadilly Records. Now on Oldham Street, the record store has become a pilgrimage for vinyl lovers from all over the country.

With all the latest releases and a back catalogue of classic records, the shop is a music-lover's paradise. We spoke to shop assistant Martin Evans, to find out what makes him tick.

Here's what he had to say...

- Where’s your favourite hidden gem?

I suppose it depends on what you call a hidden gem. Lily’s in Ancoats is tucked away down a side street, you wouldn’t really find it unless you know. They do serve curry, but it’s mainly a deli. You can get amazing, very cheap snacks.

- What’s your favourite view of the city or in the city?

I would say probably there is a view if you ever come from Trafford towards Hulme on the 250 bus route. You look down train tracks to your left, and you can see the skyline of Manchester spread out. It’s pretty spectacular. I guess you can see the Beetham Tower and towers around it.

- Where’s best to go for your dinner in town?

It would have to be Rudy’s — but it’s a toss up between there and Asmara Bella next to Port Street beer house. Probably overall it’d have to be Rudy’s, Ancoats.

- Where would you take someone to show them the real Manchester?

To anyone visiting, just avoid the Arndale, Market Street and Piccadilly. Everywhere else is nice. Around the University is beautiful, I would say NQ is fascinating with loads to do and see. Even Deansgate and Castlefield are fascinating. Other than the main shopping area, you could take someone anywhere.

- What’s your favourite Mancunian neighbourhood?

I do like Ancoats. I like Castlefield, as well.

- City or United?

I’m Leeds actually, but I’ve seen City a few times. Them and oddly enough Liverpool, I’ve had some feeling for.

- Your favourite city pub is…?

Edinburgh Castle.

- Liam or Noel?

I used to be Noel but now it’s Liam.

- Who is your favourite city ‘character’?

John Cooper Clarke, but the guy everyone knows is Barrington on the Bike. He definitely adds something.

- What’s the one thing you’d add to Manchester if you could…

Either an area where there’s more water or a city centre park. Those would make a significant difference to the place.
