Jose Fonte has revealed he held transfer talks with both Rangers and Celtic.
The centre-back, 41, was interested in a move to Glasgow but nothing materialised in the end.
Fonte - who now plays for Casa Pia in the Portuguese top flight - won the Euros in 2016, the Nations League in 2019 and Ligue 1 title with Lille in 2021.
However, he has admitted it was a shame he never managed to experience Scottish football with either of the "huge, amazing" Glasgow clubs.
Speaking to BoyleSports about Premier League Betting, Fonte said: “At one stage there were talks with both Celtic and Rangers, but in the end nothing materialised and that’s a shame.
“They are both huge clubs, amazing clubs and it would’ve been great to play for either of them."
Fonte, though, is intent on experiencing a derby day between Celtic and Rangers as he is planning a trip to Scotland to watch the match when he retires from playing professionally.
"I’ve never had the chance to experience that derby and when I get some time I’m going to go as a spectator and experience that atmosphere."
