'I will choose Man City' - What Arsenal transfer target said before Gunners talks

Arsenal are looking to sign Ajax defender Jurrien Timber in the summer transfer window.

Earlier this week, it emerged that the Gunners had been unsuccessful in their opening offer, worth £30million, for the Dutch international. football.london understands that this sum would need to be significantly increased Ajax are to part ways with the 22-year-old this summer.

But Dutch journalist Johan Inan has since claimed that Timber and the Eredivisie giants agreed to a release clause when he extended his contract at the Johan Cruyff Arena last year. It's currently unclear the exactly figure the clause sits at, but it's understood the clause will become active in two weeks.

Now, some old quotes from the versatile defender have emerged where he admitted that joining team like Manchester City would be more attractive than the likes of Barcelona because of trophies. Speaking in March 2022, via HITC, he said “I like playing for trophies, that’s why I will choose Manchester City instead of Barcelona today.

“I plan to stay here for a while. But if Manchester City call me, what should I do?”

Of course, this was before the Gunners' approach for him and City haven't since been linked with a move but these comments could worry Arsenal supporters considering the two Premier League giants are currently locked in a battle to sign West Ham United captain Declan Rice.

football.london understands that City have now entered the race to sign Rice, with Pep Guardiola's side preparing to make an offer whilst the north Londoners also ready a third bid.
