We all love a good snack, don’t we? Whether it’s to munch on whilst watching TV at the end of the day or packed up for lunch, British supermarkets have snacks galore.
We went on a hunt to find some wonderfully quirky snacks that your average supermarkets don’t sell and found the perfect place. On Woodborough Road, there is an ideal store if you’re looking for some Oriental snacks as community reporter Keimae Blake found…
I love a good snack whilst watching a bit of telly, on a Friday night especially. I quite like custard creams to go with a cup of tea or a packet of cheese and onion crisps but, I must say, unless I’m on holiday, I can’t say I have anything that can’t be bought in British supermarkets. At 108 Woodborough Road, on the city centre border with St Ann's, is the Asiana Hypermarket which have rows and rows of international goods.

The hypermarket sells many foods from around the world. There are snacks from China, Korea, Vietnam and more. I went to the international supermarket and, apart from your everyday average items such as rice, sauces and vegetables, there was a range of snacks that caught my eye. Walking around the quiet store where there was only myself and a handful of other customers, a Chupa Chups drink found its way into my basket straight away.
I thought Chupa Chups only sold lollipops but clearly I was wrong! The £1.66 drink tasted heavenly with just the right amount of fizz - I should’ve bought two! Even though this Chupa Chups strawberry flavoured fizzy drink was a tad more expensive than my usual diet coke, I rate it a 9/10!
Next up, in my basket were Gold Label Peanut Butter cookies prices at £3.19 for 300G. Now anything peanut butter, I’ll have! Although these peanut butter snacks smelt amazing, I wasn’t fond of them. They tasted a bit like stale bread but I’m sure they’re somebody else’s cup of tea.
The peanut butter snacks unfortunately weren’t for me. I rated them a 3/10. I'd usually go for marshmallows on top of hot chocolate - but these marshmallows were carefully all individually wrapped!
The packaging was quite cute and looked like the perfect lunchbox snack so these were the next snacks in my basket. The strawberry marshmallow snacks were £2.41 - I was expecting them to be a bit more expensive than your average supermarket snack but I had high hopes for them. And I was impressed. The soft marshmallows had a wonderful strawberry tang to them and deserve an 8/10.
Being the biscuit lover that I am, I bought some of the Hello Panda Double Chocolate biscuits for £1.09. But the biscuits were too small to dunk in my tea and so I wasn't sold. There was a crunchy out layer to the biscuit that I didn't really like but the surprise of a chocolate spread in the middle I loved. I rate these biscuits 5/10.
Next up was a sweet potato flavoured bag of crisps. Now, I love sweet potato but I wasn't quite sure if I'd like them in crisp form and but they were sceptically added to my basket. However, I was pleasantly surprised once I had tried them. When opening the bag, the smell alone deserved a 10/10 but the taste was just as good.
I decided to go for one more snack I've never tried before but was unfortunately disappointed. These chicken with tomato sauce flavoured potato chips were a massive no. The pretty packaging was quite deceiving and earned a 2/10 from me.
Overall, I thought I had found some new favourite snacks and, even though I wouldn't go out of my way to buy them again, if I'm ever on Woodborough Road, I shall be picking up a strawberry flavoured Chupa Chups!
