'I went to Aldi and bought an entire Jubilee picnic for less than £10 - complete with strawberries and cream and Victoria sponge cake'

The Queen's Platinum Jubilee weekend kicks off in a matter of days. Thousands of people will be hosting street parties in the name of Her Majesty.

But with food costs higher than they've been in decades, budgeting will an important aspect of how people choose to celebrate. And more importantly where they decide to shop.

Teeside Live writer Alex O'Leary decided to see how much he could buy for a tenner. Taking to his local Aldi, armed with a shopping basket, and a single note, here's his account of how he got on:

I decided to pop to the shop to see how much Jubilee street food I could get on a budget of just £10.

It was clear walking through Aldi that I'd manage to get some bargains in terms of street party food, with some great deals on fruit, frozen food, and sweet treats. With a £10 budget, the aim was to get a mixture of typical party food and Jubilee specials.

In terms of street party classics, I got cocktail sausages, tortilla chips and nuts, and plenty of garlic bread. Sticking with the Jubilee theme too, I managed to bag a Victoria sponge cake, some strawberries and cream, washed down with two huge bottles of diet lemonade.

Here is the full breakdown of the shopping list and prices:

  • Cherry cola spiral ice lollies: 99p
  • Diet lemonade: 23p
  • Diet lemonade: 23p

  • Tortilla chips: 48p

  • Cheese triangles: 75p

  • Victoria cream sponge: £1.79

  • Salted peanuts: 46p
