'I went to A&E with cramps and came out with surprise baby - I had no idea I was pregnant'

A young mum who had no idea she was pregnant got the shock of her life when she went to A&E with stomach cramps and found out she was in labour.

Abby Vollet, 22, gave birth to her 11-month-old daughter Khalani in March 2021 via emergency C-section at 35 weeks.

But Abby claims she was totally unaware she was pregnant until she got to hospital on the night her daughter ended up being delivered.

The full-time student from Missouri in the US was terrified when doctors told her she was fully dilated and needed to have a caesarean.

"I had no idea that I was pregnant. I didn't experience any symptoms and I didn't gain any weight. No one saw this coming.

"The pain started off with slight stomach cramps. They continued to get worse over the day to the point where I couldn't move, so my mum, Cindy, 54, took me to the hospital.

"I had an ultrasound and the doctors told me I was pregnant and I was fully dilated. I remember telling the doctor that it wasn't true. I was in total shock.

"At first they estimated I was around 20 weeks, but after the C-section, they said I was actually between 35 to 37 weeks."

Abby said at first, she was embarrassed to be young, single mum and even refused to see baby Khalani for the first few days of her life.

She added her friends didn't believe the story at first - because it was so close to April Fools' Day.

Abby says: "The doctors think that she must have been behind my ribs because I had no bumps and I never felt any kicks.

"I was even getting my period the whole time and I comfortably fit into all of my size medium clothes the whole way through."

Abby said she never had much of a relationship with Khalani's dad, so it's just been the two of them against the world.

She said: "Before having my daughter, I honestly never wanted to have children and didn't plan for it to happen in my life.

"But now she is here, I absolutely love her.

"It was really weird at first. I almost saw her as someone else's child. We didn't have that immediate bond because I didn't know that she was coming and it was such a shock."

Abby said, on top of the shock of having a surprise baby, she also had to deal with complications following the birth when her stitches became infected.

But after several weeks of treatment, she was on her way to recovery. And luckily, Khalani has always been in perfect health.

Abby said: "Khalani has always been healthy which is surprising because I had just turned 21 when I was pregnant. I had obviously drunk throughout the pregnancy because I was totally unaware.

"She is the easiest baby ever. She's so outgoing and funny. My miracle child."
