It is said that good things happen to people who wait. Fawad Khan also waited for his second Bollywood film for two years, even though his debut, Khoobsurat (2014), was a hit. And his patience has proven to be fruitful. Fawad’s latest release, Kapoor & Sons, is doing phenomenal business at the box office. Interestingly, he is also being praised for his character, who is homosexual in the film.
Talking to us about the role, the 34-year-old says, “Everyone has a tendency to be gay. But this movie is not about sexuality. It is just about a family that is trying to sort out their differences.”

However, was he worried about playing a gay character? “I don’t think so. A friend of mine gave me the example of Zia Mohyeddin, who is a very famous Pakistani actor. A RADA (Royal Academy of Dramatic Art), UK, graduate, he acted in Lawrence Of Arabia (1962). He also played the role of a eunuch in one of his films. That was a time when people would make fun of eunuchs. So, it was a very bold move. Mohyeddin thought that a normal person will get interested in a movie if the content is good. That interest would get heightened if one put an anomaly in it, like the unlikely character of a eunuch in the plot,” he says.
Fawad is hopeful that the way people perceive homosexuality will change. “Even if someone plays a character like that, why will he or she become an outcast? Give it some years, and things will become normal. In the future, everyone who gets worried about these things (homosexuality) will learn to accept them. If someone is a certain way, he or she just is.”
