Small independent bars and pubs across the city are starting to dwindle in numbers as the cost-of-living crisis continues to batter the country. But while many close their doors, others have managed to stay afloat, bringing in their regulars as well as some new faces.
Tucked away on Temple Street in Redcliffe, The Cornubia has managed to keep its doors firmly open despite being the most hidden pub in the city centre. Owners Phil and Jacki have been in the pub trade for more than 30 years and pride themselves on being one of the best Real Ale pubs in the city, especially after being runners-up in the 2022 Campaign for Real Ale Pub of the year.
I decided to head out into the city to find the ‘hidden pub’ to see what it was like inside and what they had to offer.
The first thing I truly noticed was that The Cornubia really is hidden away. Around the back of the main road, with parking spaces out the front, all you can see of the place is the top of the building and the flags around the garden area. I actually really liked how the venue felt secluded, more of a small community pub than you get in ones near all the hustle and bustle.
Walking onto the premises the first thing you see is the large outdoor space. Separated into three separate locations, customers are spoilt for choice on where to sit: on the decking at the front, under the marquee or in the non-smoking area. Local pubs in city centres aren’t always able to provide so much outdoor space, but The Cornubia has plenty.

Inside is what I would describe as a classic pub - cosy seating and impressive decor, the place is perfect for a drink with friends or even a solo pint on your way home. The ceiling is covered with what appears to be pump clips from different drinks, which adds a beautiful but quirky uniqueness to the place.
There is a range of different drinks on offer too, from classic spirits and pints to a variety of different ales you can try, they even have a house one named after the pub. Chatting to the staff and one of the owners, the place seems to be like home for them all and their family away from family - just what a pub should be.
I found The Cornubia to be a nice, friendly pub that gives off chilled vibes and a community feel. The staff were lovely, the customers were friendly and they’re a dog-friendly pub, what more can you ask for?
