'I've got sons, and I'm scared for them': The 'close-knit' Oldham neighbourhood rocked by brutal stabbing

Residents of a 'close-knit' Oldham neighbourhood were moved to tears today as they spoke of their fear following a brutal stabbing.

Police were called to Field Street, Failsworth shortly before 8am on Sunday morning (14 May) after reports of concern for welfare for a man in his 40s. He was rushed to hospital after sustaining 'life-changing' stabbing injuries to his wrist. A 34-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of section 18 assault.

Officers later set up a second cordon over two miles away on Heron Street, where at least 38 evidence markers could be seen around the car park of Mill View Court. Neighbours told the Manchester Evening News they were 'shocked' by the incident after hearing shouting and screaming that morning.

Two residents told the M.E.N they were woken by a 'loud bang' and 'screaming' at around 7:30am. "And then there was a lot of really loud shouting," one said. "There was a lot of banging, but we couldn't see anything. Then there was shouting, and then it went quiet.

"I couldn't go back to sleep. I was just praying everyone was okay."

She said the street was a 'close-knit community' and the incident left her worrying about the welfare of her neighbours.

"I've got sons, and I am scared for them," she told the M.E.N with tears in her eyes. "You just want to be safe where you live."

Another resident said he saw a white car 'speeding' towards Mill View Court that morning before also reporting hearing a loud bang and shouting.

"Then I saw the police," he said. "I knew it must have been something serious because they've been here all day."

However, other neighbours told the M.E.N they were not surprised by the incident. "It feels like this is happening all the time now," one said, adding that there was a 'machete attack' earlier this year in Chadderton.

In a statement, GMP said: "Shortly before 8am this morning (Sunday 14 May) Greater Manchester Police were called to concerns for welfare of a man at Field Street, Failsworth.

"Emergency services attended and a man in his 40s was taken to hospital with serious injuries to his wrist, consistent with a bladed article being used. His injuries are believed to be life changing, but not life threatening.

"A 34-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of section 18 assault. He remains in police custody for questioning.

"An investigation is underway to understand the full circumstances and one scene remains in place at Mill View Court, Oldham."
