A mum-to-be has picked out a very pretty French name for her unborn baby - but fears it might sound a little too much like the gum used by smokers to help them quit.
Although the mum in question absolutely adores the name, she now wonders whether it might work better as a middle name, given how much it reminds people of a very specific stop-smoking product.
The name in question is Nicolette, a strong and very elegant French girl's name that means "victory of the people". As pretty as it is, she isn't sure if she can get past how similar it sounds to Nicorette, a popular type of nicotine replacement gum.
Turning to Reddit for advice, the pregnant mother wrote: "I like this name more than Nicole. However, there's the anti-smoking gum Nicorette that people brought up. I still like it as a middle name."
She went on to list the names "Harper Nicolette, Nola Nicolette, and Magnolia Nicolette" as potential options, combinations which would still allow her to use the name, without having it front and centre.
Although a number of fellow Reddit users agreed that it was a very lovely name, they could completely see where her apprehensions were coming from.
One sympathetic person admitted: "My first thought was the smoking gum, sorry! It works as a middle name though!"
Drawing from personal experience, a second person said: "I'm 29 and grew up with a friend named Nicolette, and in elementary school, some kids called her Nicorette."
A third individual commented: "It makes me think of cigarettes. I didn't know why until I saw you say it was an anti-smoking gum. But it's a big no for me."
Others disagreed, however, remarking that they'd known and worked with Nicolettes in the past without ever making this connection and urging her to just go with this "cool" name if she had her heart set on it.
