'I used B&M’s scanner in South Shields for an hour and found some real bargains'

B&M shoppers have been raving about the store’s scanner function in its app for a long time. Customers have walked away with furniture for a fiver and as many candles as you could possibly need for just 10p a pop.

One mum, posting on a B&M Facebook group, found chunky knit rugs discounted from £40 to just £1. Whilst others have found rolls of wallpaper for just £2.

With this in mind, and an afternoon free, I headed to South Shields’ B&M to see what bargains I could find. I decided to avoid the aisles of homeware with the newly released ranges in, primarily because these are the ones that attack my bank account on a daily basis and headed upstairs for the furniture and candles.

Unfortunately, while I didn’t find any showstopping bargains, of the 136 products I scanned, I found many that were showing up at 50% off. Often, items had “new” stickers on but were reduced in the app and at the till.

I was extremely let down by the candle aisle, which I had high hopes for as it’s usually my first stop. Obviously, I stayed to smell every scent on offer and I did find a few that were reduced on the ticket price, but none that were below £2.

Many of the reduced items that I scanned were on shelves that didn’t have price tickets. Here are a few of the deals we found.

Grey and gold console table - £80 down to £25

Cane floor lamp - £60 down to £30

Glass & gold tealight candle holder - £7 sticker down to £4

Table lamp - £28 down to £15

Gemstone diffuser - £5 to £2.50

So if you’re heading to B&M for a shopping trip, we can recommend taking a few seconds to scan any items you’re on the fence about - you may find they have a secret discount. Ten of the items I scanned, including those above, had decent discounts.

If I had bought all ten items at their stickered prices, I’d have left B&M £324 down. However, once the discounts were taken into account, my haul would have cost just £136.50.

Some of these reductions may seem small, but during this cost of living crisis, saving every penny helps.
