I tried the Wavertree chippy Anna Jung's that always has a huge queue outside - review

Fish and chips is arguably one of the most iconic British takeaway treats, and Liverpool has plenty of local favourites to choose from.

I must confess, I am a vegetarian so I don't eat fish (ducks for cover) but I still completely adore chip shop chips. A giant chip butty is the ultimate comfort food; it instantly transports me back to my childhood, where we'd cosy up on the sofa with an occasional "chippy tea" as a treat, the traditional paper packaging nestled in our laps and providing our plates for the evening, as we tucked into a generous helping of perfectly prepared chips.

In Liverpool, I've tried a few of the popular venues across the city but after moving to Wavertree, I was keen to try Anna Jung's. The much-loved local chippy, based on Grosvenor Road, is a local legend.

Like many Liverpool chip shops, it's also a Chinese takeaway - this isn't common in my little Yorkshire hometown but is a delightful treat I've come to know and love in my 13 years of living in this city. Anna Jung's boasts an extensive menu of chip shop favourites and authentic Chinese dishes.

The chow mein from Anna Jung's (Jess Flaherty)

We opted for two portions of chips (naturally) and a bread roll (for me), as well as vegetarian chow mein, spring rolls, a portion of satay sauce, and a cheese and onion pie for good measure. It was a huge amount of food but our bill came to an affordable £16.20.

The chips were complete and utter heaven, they were soft and perfectly cooked with no annoying sharp and overly crunchy bits. They looked a little anaemic, so I was concerned they may be underdone but they were divine. I ate far too much just because they were so enjoyable.

The chow mein was packed with flavour, with delicious egg noodles and vibrant green peppers that had a satisfying yet subtle crunch to them. I would have liked a little more sauce, but that's because my palate isn't particularly sophisticated and I like my flavours to be a little stronger - hence the additional portion of satay sauce. The spring rolls were fresh and well seasoned, generously stuffed with hot, soft vegetables that managed to be light and tasty without being overly greasy.

The chips were much tastier than they look (Jess Flaherty)

The only let down was the cheese and onion pie, it was quite bland and the filling was a little too mushy which made it taste a tad sickly. I wouldn't order this again, but everything else was so well done that it was only a very minor blip on an otherwise perfect takeaway experience.

Whether you're based in Wavertree or not, it's well worth popping into Anna Jung's for a delicious takeaway treat. There's always a queue of people lining the streets to place an order and now, I know why.
