I tried the unique LELO Enigma Double Sonic vibrator - here's why it's become a new favourite

LELO Enigma Double Sonic vibrator.

We're used to seeing excellent sex toys from LELO - but the LELO Enigma Double Sonic vibrator might just be the best one yet. This is a double vibrator with a twist, targeting the clitoris and an area of the vagina many of us aren't familiar with.

The new-and-pricey LELO Enigma Double Sonic is an A-spot vibrator that promises double stimulation for enhanced orgasms. It's similar to many of the best rabbit vibrators in this way. If you’re unfamiliar with the A-spot, the first thing to make clear is that it’s not up your bum. There’s nothing wrong with sex toys designed for anal pleasure, but this isn’t one of them.

Mandy Ruther is woman&home's resident sex toy tester, having tested many of the best sex toys over the years. Here, she tests and reviews this new LELO toy, revealing all you need to know before investing and whether it's worth the spend.

What is the A-spot?

The A-spot is a close neighbour of the G-spot. It’s slightly further into your vagina, between the G-spot and cervix, which makes it harder to reach than the G-spot while masturbating. Fingers might get to the G but they won’t reach the A.

The A stands for anterior fornix erogenous zone (so it’s also known as the AFE) and it’s found 10-15cm along the vaginal front wall, so about 5cm past the G-spot. It’s sometimes referred to as the female prostate because it’s in the same place as men’s prostates.

If you look at a photo of the LELO Enigma Double Sonic, the shiny metallic bit is where you hold it, curved upwards in front of your pubic area, and the other end goes inside you. So the colourful little oval ends up by your A-spot and the circular dimple facing it goes on your clitoris. Both offer sonic stimulation and the toy vibrates to stimulate the G-spot too.

Who does the LELO Enigma Double Sonic suit?

The LELO Enigma Double Sonic is clearly a sex toy, though it comes with a black pouch so it can be stowed discretely in your sock drawer. It’s available in black or ‘Cyber Purple’. It’s best suited to solo play because it does all the work for you.

The design hits the right spots and you do very little. A partner would feel pretty redundant. At £299 at the time of testing, it’s very expensive… but, if you can afford it, can you really put a price on good orgasms?

If you don’t like penetration, this isn’t the toy for you. Look elsewhere at ‘air’ and clitoral stimulator toys like the Womanizer Premium Eco, which I reviewed earlier in the year, that offer similarly hi-tech clitoral stimulation without penetration.

What is the toy like to use?

When I first took the LELO Enigma out of the box, I was surprised how bendy it was. Pick it up by the shiny handle end and the rest is positively wibbly, much more than expected. This means it’s really flexible for getting into the right position. There’s no app - unlike many advanced sex toys these days - and it arrived charged and ready for use. Win!

Turn it on and the little colourful oval at the other end does its thing, with LELO DeepSonic technology. The oval is a sheet of soft rubber that vibrates gently and incredibly fast. The result feels more like a tongue than a finger, but so fast that it’s almost tickly.

Meanwhile, the clit stimulator is sonic and silicone, a circle around your clitoris. The vibrations don’t touch your clit, waves of air stimulate it instead. It’s intense and yet not too much, because it doesn’t directly touch it.

There are three buttons that sit under your thumb when you’re using the toy. The middle one turns it on and off with a long press, while a short press cycles through eight different modes. The top one increases intensity and the bottom one decreases it. When you switch it on, it’s always at the lowest intensity, which is good because it’s pretty full-on.

The eight modes are mostly different patterns, though one is A-spot only and one is clitoris only. Some vibrator patterns are good, others frustrating. It’s a matter of personal taste. Personally, I think a bit of variety is nice: I liked the mode that gently revs up like a motorbike and then simmers down again.

I found the Enigma easy to use and a good fit for my body. The flexibility is nice. I did have to make sure that the clitoral stimulator was positioned right but the buttons fell naturally under my thumb and I didn’t lose them mid play – something that’s very frustrating.

I don’t know whether it hit the A-spot or just offered good internal stimulation, but I found that orgasms came easily. They were intense and flowed from the whole area. They were satisfying and the toy was comfortable enough that I found I could turn it off, leave it in and relax, then go again a bit later. It works well then for the ‘plateau’ nature of female orgasms and multiple orgasms.

How loud is the Enigma Double Sonic vibrator?

One downside is the noise. It's pretty loud with a bassy vibration and sounds like a quiet jackhammer rather than a wasp, as most bullet vibrators and wand vibrators sound like. It certainly doesn't pass the 'electric toothbrush test' - where someone in the room next door could reasonably convince themselves that you were brushing your teeth, not flicking the bean. Obviously, once you're using it, you won't care...

Is the LELO Enigma waterproof?

The LELO Enigma Double Sonic is 100% waterproof, much like many other advanced sex toys, such as the LELO Smart Wand and LELO Dot. This is a handy feature on many premium vibrators as it makes it so much easier to clean your vibrator without needing specialist wipes and sprays, and you can take it into the shower or the bath with you for some downtime.

How long does it take to charge the LELO Enigma Double Sonic?

The LELO comes ready to go, fully charged so you can start using it immediately. But when you need to recharge it, it takes two hours via the USB cable included in the packaging. A symbol on the opposite side to the buttons lights up to show you the toy is charging.

It has a respectable standby time of 90 days, meaning you can use it regularly without constantly charging the toy.

Is the LELO Enigma Double Sonic worth it?

The LELO Enigma Double Sonic is expensive but impressive. It’s good for solo play, offering intense orgasms from a mix of internal and clitoral stimulation, which is great if you enjoy penetration.

It cost £299 at the time of testing, though I have found it fractionally cheaper on Amazon at £275 - and you can buy the previous model, the Enigma Dual Stimulation toy for as little as £114. There are also other satisfying toys out there for less...but if you can afford it then I promise you won’t be disappointed.
