I tried the new Papa John's 'Papadias' and one thing let it down

Popular pizza takeaway chain Papa John's have recently launched their new 'Papadias', an Italian style flatbread that's part sandwich part pizza.

I've been a big fan of Papa John's for years, and always fight their corner in the 'Domino's or Papa John's?' debate. I also absolutely love their garlic butter sauce, and controversially think it's better than Domino's too.

I decided it was time to try the new 'Papadias', which comes in five different varieties - Philly Cheesesteak, Philly Mushroom, Italian Sausage & Pepperoni, BBQ Chicken & Bacon, and Vegan Philly Mushroom. I decided to go for the BBQ Chicken & Bacon and I also ordered a Sausage & Pepperoni for my partner.

The Papadias are priced at £5.99 each, with the BBQ Chicken & Bacon and Philly Cheesesteak costing £6.49. I wasn't too sure what to expect in terms of size, because I can usually polish off a large pizza (shared of course) with no problems.

After a rather quick delivery, it was time to dig in. The first thing I noticed was the size of the Papadias, they were actually a lot bigger than I imagined. It basically looked like a calzone, which was cut in half to make two Papadias.

The outer crust was crispy and hot, and revealed deliciously hot toppings after a big bite. There was one issue though. My Papadia was had so much BBQ sauce in it, to the point where it spilt out after every bite.

It was so cheesy (Emily Sleight/ Liverpool ECHO)

It still tasted amazing, but the BBQ sauce was a little overpowering and I had Papadia envy of my partner's topping choice. Once I'd gotten over the saucy mess, I really enjoyed the Papadia, it was a nice change and actually felt a little lighter than a large pizza.

It may not look like much, but the Papadia was actually really filling too. I was conscious it was just going to be like a small sandwich, but I was completely wrong. Once dipped into the glorious garlic butter sauce, it was basically a match made in heaven.

The Papadia's had a very satisfying cheese pull which made the meal very moreish indeed. As a tip though, for those who don't like spice, beware of the jalapeños in the Italian Sausage & Pepperoni - it's a nice touch for some but not everyone's cup of tea I'm sure.

I'll definitely be ordering one again, but I'll probably go for a different variety because of the messy BBQ sauce. As a whole, my first Papadia experience was a positive one, it gets four stars from me.
