With Easter on the horizon comes an abundance of hot cross buns and chocolate.
One thing I didn't think I'd get to try this year was a 'hot cross bun mayonnaise' - but there's a first time for everything, right? When I first heard about the new release, I had a lot of questions.
The main one being, did this hot cross bun mayo actually taste like mayo, and if so, how on earth would it work on a fruity hot cross bun? Thankfully for anyone intrigued, I got to taste the interesting combination so you don't have to. Here's how it went.

Thankfully, this mayo is actually a 'sweet' mayo, which does sound a little weird. In terms of taste, Heinz describes the mayo as a blend of the Heinz Seriously Good Mayonnaise with toasted hot cross buns, swirled with sweet cinnamon spices. It's advised that you either 'double down' on the hot cross bun flavour by spreading it on the hot cross bun, or 'enjoying it straight from the jar with a spoon'.
The look
If I'm being totally honest, I've definitely seen nicer looking spreads. The hot cross bun mayo was very thick in terms of consistency, and contained some ominous looking chunks.
Considering I'm not a huge fan of raisins, I was really worried that the mayo would just have bits of raisins in, which is quite frankly a horrific thought. The mayonnaise wasn't white like usual mayonnaise, and had more of a yellow/brown shade to it - like a hot cross bun.
I think the key to this mayonnaise was to ignore how it looked, and focus more on how it tasted - which was actually pretty surprising. After dipping in my knife and spreading it on a plain hot cross bun, I was relatively impressed with the outcome.
The taste
Okay, so, the most important part is how did this strange concoction actually taste? The answer was - pretty good!
If I had to describe the taste of the hot cross bun mayo, I'd say it tasted like the creamy taste you get on a hot cross bun when you've slathered it in butter. It wasn't too overpowering or strong which I was really glad about, considering the mayo itself looks quite thick and gloopy.
Thankfully, the addition of dried fruits in the mayo weren't that evident in terms of texture, and they seemed to blend seamlessly with the spread which was nice. If you're a big fan of the actual taste of a hot cross bun, this mayo seems to perfectly replicate that.
You do need to be careful though, because a double flavouring of hot cross bun definitely isn't for everyone. For me, the concept of a savoury mayonnaise on a hot cross bun was a little weird, but since the spread ended up being sweet, it was no where near as bad as I thought it would be.
The verdict
Quite understandably, the Heinz Hot Cross Bun mayo isn't for everyone, but it actually ended up being way nicer than I thought it would. I think the key is to try and forget that its 'mayo' and enjoy the taste.
For those of you that love that classic cinnamon taste of a hot cross bun, this mayo is definitely worth a try. It's a fun different concept, and I'm excited/scared to see what Heinz come up with next.
