'I tried the McDonald's burger that fans call a game-changer - it lives up to the hype'

McDonald's made some changes to their menu this week, adding a brand new burger which was great news for vegans, or those taking part in Veganuary.

The Double McPlant is now available in all UK and Ireland restaurants but ahead of its launch, fans of the fast food chain were quick to brand it a "game-changer".

The vegan burger is cooked separately from other Mcdonald's offerings and features two Beyond Meat patties, a vegan sesame bun, mustard, ketchup, the 'ultimate' vegan sandwich sauce, fresh onion, pickles, lettuce, tomato and of course, vegan cheese.

Intrigued by the excitement surrounding this new menu item, I decided to give it a try to see if it lives up to the hype - and having never tried a McPlant before, I have to say I was very impressed by the results.

If you put the Double McPlant in front of me, away from any packaging and without context, I'd struggle to tell you whether it was made of meat or not.

There's something ever so slightly different about the patty itself, but it's almost indistinguishable in terms of taste from a regular cheeseburger.

The only thing that tells you it's something new is the size of the two patties, which are much more generous looking than those on a regular beef patty from the fast food giants.

I recently had a regular McDonald's cheeseburger while out shopping and was so disappointed when my order was ready. The burger was so pitifully thin and cardboard-like, living up to the stereotypes associated with McDonald's food in the past.

It just wasn't an enjoyable eat, but the Double McPlant was on a completely different level, tasting more flavourful and making for a much more eye-catching lunch option, thanks to the double-stacked patties.

The only downside to the whole thing is the vegan bun, which is a little dryer than regular bread, but as the burger was packed with condiments, it wasn't too much of an issue overall.

It shouldn't come as too much of a surprise that the McPlant is proving a success, as the burger took McDonald's over three years to develop. After that amount of time, you'd hope it was worth the wait.

The original was released in restaurants in September 2021.

It's not been confirmed yet how long this new version will be available, so you may need to be quick if you want to get your hands on one.

The Double McPlant is available now and costs £4.89 on its own, or £6.49 as a meal.
