I tried the Marks and Spencer hot cross bun liqueur and was blown away by the smell

To celebrate Easter 2022, Marks & Spencer has launched its own version of an Irish Cream that tastes like hot cross buns.

With a flavour of cinnamon spices, dried fruit and a citrus zest, the cream liqueur is made with fresh cream from the ‘Ballyrashane Creamery’.

I ventured out to M&S to see if I could get my hands on the creamy drink, which was tucked away amongst the alcohol section in a small 35cl bottle.

Being a big hot cross bun lover, I had high hopes for this drink, but I was also sceptical as to whether M&S could really pull this off.

The liqueur

The cute bottle was dinky, but aesthetically looked great, with a colourful label, it essentially looked like a miniature bottle of Bailey’s.

As I poured the liqueur into the glass, it had a thick creamy appearance just like the Irish cream drink we all know and love.

The drink smelt just like hot cross buns, with a mixture of spices and a hint of raisin.

I took a sip and was surprised to say the least.

It didn’t taste anything like it smelt, the initial taste was basically fruit and raisins as opposed to anything else.

Strangely, the after taste was more like hot cross buns than the initial taste, leaving a cinnamon and raisin flavour in my mouth - which some may dislike.

The verdict

The drink was nice, but it definitely didn’t blow me away, it felt like there was something missing. Perhaps it was the initial taste that put me off a bit, but it was still enjoyable.

I’ll be honest, I definitely couldn’t drink a lot of this, but when paired with a couple of ice cubes, it’s quite pleasant.

Just a warning, if you don’t like raisins you might not like this, because it was quite an overpowering flavour of the drink.
