I tried the M&S Plant Kitchen 'chorizo' sausages and was pleasantly surprised

M&S Plant Kitchen now has a large range of plant-based foods for vegans, vegetarians, and for those who just fancy a meat free meal.

In light of Veganuary, M&S has also launched 175 new vegan foods from quick vegan lunches to sweet treats for a chocolate fix.

As a big meat eater, I thought it was only right that I tried the "Plant Kitchen Chorizo Puppies" to really put them to the test.

Being a big lover of chorizo, I was unsure whether the vegan alternative would have the unique taste, here's what I thought.

How it looks

The general appearance of the 'Chorizo Puppies' wasn't too dissimilar to a chorizo sausage, but you could definitely tell that it wasn't real chorizo.

Perhaps it was the slight shine to the sausage, almost making it look fake, that put me off slightly, but there was something definitely intriguing about the sausages.

The general taste was a mixture of tomato and spice (Emily Sleight/ Liverpool ECHO)

M&S have definitely got the colour right, the strong bold classic chorizo red added to the appearance of the mini sausage which brought up my general rating.

After cooking the sausages, I will admit, they looked slightly dry, but once I actually tried the sausage my opinion soon changed.

How it tastes

The two main flavours I got instantly when trying these sausages were tomato and spice.

If you don't mind tomato flavoured foods with a bit of a kick, you're definitely going to enjoy the M&S Chorizo Puppies.

So, what's actually in the ingredients? Well, there's mildly spiced mushrooms, soya, red pepper, caramelised onion, smoked paprika, roasted garlic and chilli powder.

I'll admit, the best part about these sausages is the fact that none of those flavours are missed, with every bite you got a hint of strong garlic and spice - but not quite chorizo.

Granted, chorizo is spicy at times, but these sausages had almost too much spice.

The verdict

If we take consistency into consideration, the M&S Chorizo Puppies weren't too far away from an actual chorizo sausage, with a few small differences.

The outside wasn't as crispy as a sausage might be, but the inside definitely wasn't dry like I assumed it would be, so I was impressed in that regard.

I'd definitely eat these sausages again, and would strongly recommend them to any non-meat eaters who are in the mood for something relatively 'meaty'.

The spice and overwhelming tomato taste is what knocks the sausage from a five to a four for me, but I still really enjoyed them nonetheless.
