I tried the limited edition 'posh' Jubilee Sensations crisps and one tasted like smelly socks

With the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee edging closer, many shoppers are gearing up for big buffets and garden parties.

Whether you're a royalist or not, the celebration is giving us all a long weekend (June 2-6) and the weather is set to be 18 degrees. That means many of us will be venturing out for picnics, street parties, barbecues, the lot - so snacks are essential.

In honour of the Platinum Jubilee Weekend, Walkers Sensations have launched two new "posh" flavours which are spit-roast and apple sauce, and baked cheese with sweet honey. Sensations are calling the launch its "poshest ever" campaign, so I decided to put them to the test.

I managed to find both flavours at my local Asda, and interestingly, there seemed to be more packs of the baked cheese and sweet honey left on the shelves - now I know why. I opened both packets and gave them a taste, and the results were a little unexpected.

The spit-roast & apple sauce flavour

I wasn’t too sure what to expect with this flavour because I didn't know if the apple sauce would be overpowering and completely ruin the crisp. The crisp itself had a lovely crunch to it like all Sensations do, and they were absolutely packed with flavour.

Usually, a packet of crisps never really actually tastes like what it says, but this time, it was spot on. The initial taste was quite meaty, leading to the sweet apple sauce as an aftertaste.

I was also really chuffed with the amount of crisps you actually got in the bag, as most of the time they're usually filled halfway and full of air. I'm actually a bit gutted that this is just a limited edition flavour, because these ones are just as tasty as the popular Thai Sweet Chilli in my opinion.

The baked cheese with sweet honey flavour

I had high hopes for this one considering I'm a big lover of cheese, and I have to confess that I really didn’t enjoy this flavour at all. Of course, it's all down to opinion and personal preference, but for me, these crisps resembled smelly socks.

Don't get me wrong, I'm usually a big fan of a cheese flavoured crisp - give me a Wotsit any day of the week and I'll be happy but not this flavour! I think the sweet honey made the crisps end up tasting quite sickly and not particularly cheesy at all.

It left a pretty grim aftertaste in my mouth and just wasn't enjoyable at all - especially after I tried the delightful spit-roast flavour first. Those who don't mind a bit of sweetness with their crisps might enjoy this new Sensations offering, but unfortunately I didn't.

The verdict

Sensations have smashed it with the spit-roast and apple sauce flavour in my opinion, which is why the Jubilee limited edition crisps will be getting a middle of the range three out of five from me.

It's such a shame that I didn't enjoy the baked cheese with honey crisps, because on paper they sound absolutely amazing. You can purchase a pack of the spit-roast and apple flavour here or find the baked cheese flavour at your local Asda.
