I tried the Leeds café serving mouth-watering Yorkshire Pudding burgers

We all love a Yorkshire Pudding- so why not make a burger out of them?

Wapentake on Kirkgate in Leeds city centre offers exactly that. The cosy café bar advertises its Chef's signature as 'not for the faint hearted'.

Wapentake also offers other Yorkshire dishes such as a breakfast Yorkshire pudding, or a Yorkshire breakfast (comes with Hendos beans). I headed to the café one lunchtime to see if I was up to the mark for the Yorkshire Pudding burger.

The café itself is a nice venue, homely, full of lovely dark wood, and dog-friendly. It was £12.50 for the entire Yorkshire Pudding burger meal, which you order at the bar and the staff there were very friendly.

I chose beef over chicken for my burger on advice I was given. I took a seat by the large windows upstairs, and the meal was with me within 10 or 15 minutes.

The Yorkshire Puddings had risen nicely, and sandwiched a generous beef burger topped with bacon and cheese. It was served with thick cut wedges and a big jug of gravy.

The Yorkshire Puddings were, as hoped, light and fluffy on the inside, with a nice crispy outside - and worked very nicely in place of bread. With the gravy, the cheese melted nicely into the bacon and beef burger, providing a hearty and comforting burger that felt like eating Sunday lunch.

The wedges were very generous, and were well-seasoned and melt-in-the-mouth. The burger was advertised as not for the faint-hearted, and the meal did eventually defeat me - I finished the burger but couldn't quite fit in all the chips, so this meal will fill you up.

But I would indeed try a Yorkshire Pudding burger again - why not focus on the best part of Sunday roast? Plus, Wapentake is a lovely café that I would've been happy to spend the afternoon with a book in - I'll be back.

Total bill:

Beef Yorkshire Pudding burger: £12.50
