I tried the last minute Jubilee outfit hack using 20p Aldi carrier bag

The Bank Holiday weekend is upon us with Brits up and down the country planning barbecues, street parties and gatherings to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. And if like me you’ve been running around the shops stocking up on ice because you forgot to buy the Aldi ice maker, and picking up party food - you may have forgot to pick up an outfit.

Earlier this week I did share some great red, white and blue options from the likes of Boohoo and PrettyLittleThing, but even next day delivery is unlikely to help you now.

So what if I told you that all you need is a white t-shirt and a 20p Aldi carrier bag?

You’ve all probably got a plain white tee in your drawers already, and with Aldi open as usual over the Bank Holiday, you won’t be hard pressed to pick up a carrier bag. That’s if you don’t do the good old Brit thing and have a carrier bag full of carrier bags in the pantry, anyway.

You may have noticed that one side of an Aldi carrier bag features a Union Jack flag made with tomatoes and blueberries - and there’s a genius way you can transform this into the perfect outfit to wear over the four-day weekend.

This hack has been going viral on TikTok in recent weeks, ideal for cash-strapped parents who needed a last minute party look for school kids on the last day of term. But it’ll work just as well for yourself, too.

You’ll need a plain white top, a trusty Aldi carrier bag, some baking paper and an iron. I have to admit I was quite sceptical about whether it would work or not, but the results were surprisingly great.

I cut out a heart shape from the Aldi carrier bag, having folded it in half to ensure an even shape. Then, I placed it on the front of the white top, layering a sheet of baking paper over it before slowly ironing over the top.

It took a little bit of trial and error, but the plastic soon secured itself to the fabric, leaving behind a rather patriotic heart shaped design. And actually, if you don’t point out the fruit and veg to your Jubilee guests, I don’t think anyone will really notice.

Shoppers can also use their Aldi carrier bags as bunting if they carefully cut out the flags from the shopping bag and attach them to a piece of string for a last minute waterproof garden decoration.

I was really quite pleased with the t-shirt and rather smug it had only cost me 20p, and it’s ideal if you’ve raided your wardrobe and have been unable to cobble together a look Geri Halliwell would be proud of.
