I tried the highest reviewed purple shampoo and I couldn’t believe the results after just one quick wash.
As my natural hair colour is dark brown, keeping my blonde highlights ‘hairdresser fresh’ is quite a task. My hair also has warm undertones so it loves to revert back to a brassy, yellow blonde just a few weeks after visiting the salon.
Purple shampoo is a toning shampoo specially designed for blonde, silver, bleached or brassy hair. It features crushed violet pigments that neutralise brassy and yellow tones.

I’ve been meaning to find a good purple shampoo for some time now and after some research online and thoroughly reading reviews, it was apparent near enough straight away which one I had to purchase.
I decided to give the Olaplex No. 4P Blonde Enhancer Toning Shampoo. I’ve used various other Olaplex products in the past which I absolutely adored so it seemed like a no brainer to try their purple shampoo.
Olaplex, however, is known for its hefty price tags as it is one of the largest independent hair care brands in the world. But luckily for me, ASOS currently has 19% off the product.
I managed to get the purple shampoo for £22.50 instead of £28. Yes, this is still expensive for only 250ml of shampoo but after reading raving five star reviews, I knew it would be worth it.
How to:
I only needed to get rid of the brassy tones from the top half of my hair as I have sewn extensions in my hair so I did not want to apply purple shampoo to them. I sectioned the hair that I wanted to apply the Olaplex to and popped it in a clip before tying my remaining hair back.
I washed my hair first with my usual shampoo to make sure it was clean before applying the purple shampoo. It states on the bottle to “lather fully and let process for one to three minutes” or if you want more ‘intense toning’ to “leave on hair for up to five minutes.”
I popped gloves on before applying the shampoo to my hair as it is so pigmented that it would have stained my hands and nails purple which isn’t a good look. I left it on for about three to four minutes as I didn’t want any traces of lilac/purple tones to appear if I was to leave it on for too long.
The verdict:
After washing the shampoo off, I could tell before I even dried it that it had tamed the yellowness of my blonde, it looked a much cleaner blonde even when it was wet.
After just one wash with the Olaplex No. 4P Blonde Enhancer Toning Shampoo I was so happy with the results. It nearly got rid of all of the brassiness from my hair apart from a slight few stubborn sections near my roots.
I was worried at first as purple shampoo can dry out your hair but I was so impressed as my hair felt so soft when I had dried it. Even though the price tag is high, I’m so happy I bought this product. For me personally, it’s the best purple shampoo I have tried as such a little goes a long way.
