'I tried the breakfast Reese Witherspoon has eaten for 8 years - it was a surprise'

While a plate of pancakes is considered to be the king of breakfasts, it isn't always possible to eat it everyday before you head out the door for work. But wanting to make sure she is energised for the day ahead, Reese Witherspoon has been eating the same breakfast for at least eight years - and credits it for making her skin glow.

The 46-year-old has shared how to make her go-to green smoothie on Instagram after explaining how she was first introduced to it at an award show. So, I wanted to try it for myself to see whether Reese's morning drink could replace my morning cereal - and I was pleasantly surprised by its taste.

In her video, Reese said: "This is the smoothie I have every single day and have probably [had it] for eight or nine years.

"It has lots of vegetables in it. I have this instead of breakfast at around 10am to 11am and then I'm not hungry at all until about 1pm."

Using one whole banana, apple, pear, lemon, two heads of romaine lettuce, half a cup of spinach, and half a cup of coconut water, she went on to demonstrate how she makes her special drink.

She simply chops it all up in to manageable sizes, drops it all in to the blender and waits about 30 seconds for it to turn into a liquid consistency.

It costs about £1.40 ($1.68) per smoothie (@reesewitherspoon)

"First of all, you need two heads of romaine lettuce - I know this seems like a lot but you've [got to get your greens in]. I already put a little [half a cup] of spinach in here," she added.

"You can put celery in there. You can put anything green in there from the fridge. If you have lettuce and you didn't make that salad that you wanted to make, you can put it in there.

"It has to have something sweet otherwise it is too bitter so I put in one pear, one apple and one banana.

"I also put in an entire lemon - I take the rind off and put the whole thing in, seeds and all because it gets chopped up and all that fibre is really good for you."

She simply chopped it all up and put it in the blender (@reesewitherspoon)

To finish it off, she adds half a cup of coconut water before giving it a whiz in the blender.

She went on to explain how it makes two portions, meaning you can save one in the fridge for the following day to save yourself time in the morning.

Reese added: "I know it looks like it tastes gross - but it tastes so good.

"The person who told me about this recipe for the first time was Kerry Washington.

"I sat next to her at an award show - I didn't really know her - but I said, 'Your skin is so beautiful, what do you do?'

Reese usually makes two smoothies at a time (@reesewitherspoon)

"She said, 'Actually, I think it's from this drink. It's really changed my skin and it makes my hair and nails really strong'."

Reese added: "It's so good - I love it so much. Try it, it's my green smoothie recipe - I hope you like it."

Before making Reese's go-to smoothie, I had to go out and buy all the ingredients needed.

For everything, it worked out to be around £1.40 ($1.68) per smoothie when buying in 'bulk' - such as purchasing one bag of apples rather than one singular apple.

The smoothie took less than 10 minutes to make - with this including all the chopping and cleaning up afterwards.

It tasted much better than I was expecting, especially since I usually opt for berry smoothies and stay clear of the green, leafy ones.

The smoothie also gave me a great energy boost and kept me full for longer than my usual morning cereals would.

While I would happily make this again, I would make a small tweak, adding more coconut water into the recipe as the smoothie was too thick for my liking.

Commenting on Reese's video, one fan said: "Thanks for this - I have been having this for breakfast every morning this week and it has improved my energy levels and is so yummy. I'm hooked!

Another user added: "I had it this morning and used apple juice because I couldn't find coconut water. It worked anyway - super tasty!"

A third fan said: "I made it and it's delicious. I added hemp protein but you can add flax seeds which are really good for you."
