I tried new hidden Nottingham sushi spot and it was 10 out of 10

Fish and chips, burgers and other takeaway options always hit the spot but there’s a new way place in town for sushi lovers - and they will definitely be something for you to enjoy, as community reporter Keimae Blake reports…

As much as I love a full English or, as I’ve recently discovered, the new Steakhouse Stack at Mcdonalds, I traded the unhealthier options this week for some of the best sushi I’ve ever had. At the back of Wilko in the city centre is the new Sushi Yoka.

With the balloons from their opening still on the shop front, I was excited to try one of the newest editions in the Nottingham food scene.

I’ve mentioned before the only thing I won’t eat is baked beans - and whilst sushi isn’t everyone's cup of tea, I certainly enjoy it.

Usually, the sushi I get is from Tesco, YO! or M&S so I was excited to try somewhere new. With more than 50 options on their menu and what looks like an unreal sharing feast for £41.50. I was like a deer caught in the headlights as I stared up at the menu wondering what on earth I would have.

There was too much to choose from! Wanting to try something that I’ve never had before, a California roll or a fiery tuna roll wasn’t what I opted for.

It was between the katsu chilli roll and the salmon crunch - they both sounded absolutely delicious. After a short moment of deciding what to have, I went for the katsu chilli roll for £7.32.

The roll has cooked breaded chicken in it, cucumber, lettuce, coated in spicy pepper, topped with mayo, Yoka sauce and fried onion. It sounded heavenly!

As the rain poured outside, there weren't many people in the restaurant. As Deliveroo drivers came in and out, it was clear that inside of braving a walk in the rain, Deliveroo had come to the rescue.

Either way, they’re still getting appetising and flavoursome sushi. With packed sushi in the shop too for those on-the-go, you can also grab a drink to take with you.

For those scared of spice, don’t worry, the katsu chilli roll isn’t spicy. Biting into my first piece, the fluffy white rice was perfect and the chicken was freshly baked, succulent and soft.

I love the classic cucumber crunch in sushi and the mayo on top was surprisingly the correct sauce for this roll. I’ve never had mayo and sushi before, but it works.

Almost forgetting my soy sauce, it’s always the perfect finishing touch and the spicy pepper added the right amount of tang to everything, although it wasn’t that spicy.

Taking a menu with me and thanking the staff, Sushi Yoka is hands-down somewhere new to try with the best sushi I've had in a long time. Their menu is 10/10 it looks divine with all the many options you can choose from and so is the food!

For a healthier, tasty lunch, Sushi Yoka is worth popping into.
