I've been to Manchester Christmas Markets lots of times, but I've never once sampled the promised delight of a Yorkshire pudding wrap.
For some reason, I'm always a bit late to the party with things like this. Like with halloumi fries, people were raving about them long before I ever tried them and now I'm obsessed.
I'd always wanted to try a Yorkie wrap, I always intended on getting one, but it never quite happened.

Either the queue would be too big, or my children would want something from a different stall and, well, you get the picture.
So with a tiny group of around five people waiting at the stall in Cathedral Gardens on Thursday night I saw my chance and I took it.
The choices were chicken or beef for £8 each, minted lamb £9, or a mixture of meats for £10.

I opted for chicken with everything on it - potatoes, stuffing, seasonal veg and gravy. Perhaps that was my first mistake.
As it was passed to me there was gravy already dripping from the bottom. With a look that suggested I was in some way to blame for the resulting counter splashes, I was handed some foil to put underneath it.
But the problem was it was already so tightly wrapped in paper that I couldn't get to the thing to eat it properly.
It was like a tightly swaddled baby Jesus and every time I tried to gently free it from the wrapper, I ended up breaking off a soggy chunk of Yorkshire and was in danger of missing out on all the filling altogether.

What it needed was for me to sit down and open it up and try to put it back together in some way that I could actually get to it. But this is the markets, with little chance of a seat and not really anywhere you'd fancy plonking your food to start rearranging it.
It tasted good, but not as tasty as I expected. After years of drooling over them and listening to people bang on about how good they are, I was expecting something amazing.
In reality it was like someone had served me a rather average Sunday dinner and expected me to eat it with my arms behind my back. I think that would have been easier.
Did I eat it? Eventually, yes. But I won't be going back for another any time soon. Of course if someone throws in some pigs in blankets, I might just be tempted, but then that'd be even more of a challenge.
