I tried Morrisons' Valentine's Dine in Meal to see if it was good value for money

Valentine's Day is round the corner and not everyone will be wanting to head out to a fancy restaurant this year - which means it's time to head to the supermarket.

Every year, multiple major supermarkets across the country pull out all the stops with their own dine in meal deals for two in the hopes to catch the attention of couples and singles alike.

One of them to pull out all the stops this year has been Morrisons, as the British supermarket chain recently unveiled their luxurious menu for 2022.

Couples can tuck into a starter, main, two sides, dessert and a bottle of fizz all for the bargain friendly price of just £15.

Supermarket chiefs have confirmed their chefs have been "working tirelessly to bring customers new and delicious options".

At such low costs, you can't really complain, which is why I decided to find out if Morrisons' Valentine's Day Dine in For Two deal was really good value for money.

And, because we all know there are so many ways to spend February 14, I decided to call up a friend to share a three-course meal with for our very own 'Galentines'.

Here's how I got on...

The menu

Morrisons has promised shoppers a luxurious dine in deal for Valentine's Day this year (Rachel Williams)

Like all the other options out there, Morrisons' meal deal lets shoppers create their very own three-course menu that comes complete with a bottle of bubbly.

This year's deal includes a range of items from the supermarket's popular The Best range, which went available on Wednesday, February 9.

Here's what I decided to pick up from the deal.

  • Starter: Camembert tear and share bread
  • Main: Sirloin steaks with garlic butter
  • Sides: Maris Piper dauphinoise potatoes and a carrot and kale medley
  • Dessert: Pink Gin Jelly Shots
  • Bubbly: Best Prosecco DOC

Starter

The tear and share bread was a luxurious start to the dinner (Rachel Williams)

To start the meal, I decided to pick up the garlic tear and share bread with a Camembert in the middle - because who doesn't love garlic bread and cheese?

I love any sort of tear and share bread and it makes for a good option when you are sharing with someone else.

I'll be honest, it's rather difficult for me to find a fault with this starter.

The bread was seasoned well with good hints of garlic - none of that barely there garlic taste - and it was soft and spongy, which was really good for dipping into the melted cheese.

As for the cheese, it wasn't over-powering, melted really well and tasted delicious when it had chunks of garlic bread dipped into it.

Was this a rather luxurious starter? Possibly, but I love garlic bread and cheese, so I can't really fault this one.

Main and sides

The sirloin steaks caught my eye with their love-heart shaped butter (Rachel Williams)

Up next for the main course, I decided to serve up two sirloin steaks with pink peppercorn sauce served up with dauphinoise potatoes and a carrot and kale medley.

Now, I know what you are all probably thinking - that's a lot of cheese in just two dishes and, honestly, you wouldn't be wrong.

However, as I mentioned before, I'm a fan of cheese and I think these potatoes are the perfect accompaniment to a good steak.

I'll be honest, the reason I was attracted to the steaks was the adorable love-heart shaped peppercorn butter and, considering these cost £8 outside of the deal, I was expecting good quality.

The dauphinoise potatoes were a rather indulgent side, we'll admit (Rachel Williams)

Saying that, the cost is still less than a restaurant, so I still can't really complain.

Thankfully, the steaks were lovely and succulent and they paired perfectly well with the peppercorn butter - though, I will admit that the butter did make them just slightly a bit greasier than I would have liked.

Aside from that, the taste was really nice and the peppercorns were never over powerful.

As for the sides themselves, this is where it gets interesting.

I can find absolutely no fault with the dauphinoise potatoes as the cheese sauce was rich, creamy and came with hints of garlic that gave it that extra flavour.

The carrot and kale medley didn't need the orange zest dressing (Rachel Williams)

However, the carrot and kale medley I'll admit was a pretty interesting choice for me and the only reason I picked it up was because it was the only side available in my local Morrisons.

It wasn't bad by any means and the carrots and kale added a vibrant touch to the meal, but they did come with an orange zest dressing and that was interesting to say the least.

I think the orange didn't really pair with all the other flavours on the plate and I did find it difficult to finish this side but, had they not come with the dressing then I think this would have been fine.

Dessert

Every girl can't resist a pink gin jelly shot (Rachel Williams)

Now, was there any other way for a couple of girls to end the evening than with some pink gin jelly shots?

I'll be honest, I was slightly apprehensive about this one, as I'm not always the biggest fan of jelly and I have to be in the mood for it but this surprised me.

Considering I was pretty full from the previous courses, this pudding proved to be really light and didn't feel as overly-indulgent as the other courses.

The mixture of the gin and the raspberries was also a really refreshing end to what was already a very flavourful dinner.

Overall, I can't find fault with these little shots, they were a good way to end the meal.

Bubbly

The prosecco was nice and refreshing for the end of the meal (Rachel Williams)

The prosecco was a nice accompaniment to the meal, because who doesn't love prosecco?

I'll be honest, I can't really say much about the prosecco, as you get exactly what you expect from the bottle.

Though, I will say that it was very refreshing and light with hints of lemon that worked really well.

Overall verdict

Overall, the meal was great value for money and perfect for two people (Rachel Williams)

Overall, I think Morrisons are offering a wonderfully luxurious meal deal this Valentine's Day for much less and I think it's on par with the likes of M&S and Waitrose.

Also, who wouldn't want to get a full three-course meal for just £15 from the comforts of their home this year?

As all items included are from the supermarket's best-selling The Best range you really are getting good value for money as the overall meal would have come to £24.99, you really are saving those pennies.

The portion sizes were also huge, which added to the overall value and none of it really left me feeling disappointed.

I will say that the carrot and kale medley with the orange dressing was an interesting choice, though, and that choice was on me as it was the only option available.

Overall, a luxurious three-course meal that is perfect for however you are choosing to spend Valentine's Day this year.

Overall rating: 4.5/5.
