In the centre of Bristol is arguably one of the best places to get freshly made food for lunch. St Nicholas Market offers a wide range of stalls selling a variety of different cuisines from Chinese to Portuguese food, a juice bar, a falafel stall and even a BBQ meat stall.
Just walking around the market with all the different aromas floating around is enough to make your stomach grumble. While many of the food stalls caught my eye, the one that really took my fancy was the BBQ stall Low and Slow.
With options of three meats, pulled pork, beef brisket or chicken thigh, in either a bun or a box with sides, it’s no wonder the queue for the place took ten minutes to clear. Jumping in at the end, I hoped they had the meal I was wanting - their website says to come quickly as food could run out towards the end of lunchtime.
At the stall, there are a few options you can go for, either meat in a bun and then the option to add sides for an extra cost, or one of the box meals. In the box meal you get a large helping of your meat of choice, some salad leaves and then two sides. The box meal prices vary slightly depending on the meat you choose, beef brisket and chicken boxes cost £8.50 while the pulled pork box a pound cheaper at £7.50.
They also do a Barbecue box which has pulled pork, beef brisket and burnt ends with a choice of two sides, jalapenos, pickles, salad and any sauce you choose. All of that cost £9.95.
The meal I decided to go for was the pulled pork box meal, not being the biggest fan of meat in a bun this option was perfect for me. With my meat choice sorted I then had the choice of which two sides I wanted - I went for the Mac’n’Cheese as well as their slaw. To top my box off I had a few jalapenos and the Chipotle Peach sauce.
The first thing I thought when opening my box to eat was that there was a lot of food there, so I definitely wasn’t going to be left hungry.
Starting with the Mac’n’Cheese I found it to be alright but definitely wasn’t my favourite part of the meal. The taste wasn’t exactly what I would’ve expected for Mac’n’Cheese and the pasta was slightly al dente, which while not a problem, made the flavour stand out more. If I went to the stall again I wouldn’t choose this as one of my two sides.
The next part of the box I tried was the slaw and I have to say this was amazing and one of the best parts of the meal. The taste and texture was exactly like the homemade slaw you make at home in the summer, the gorgeous crunchy texture provided the perfect contrast to the meat and made the dish feel more summery.
The final part of the dish and the main ingredient was the all-important meat. As I previously mentioned, I went with the pulled pork meat option, and I definitely chose the right option as the meat was so succulent it just melted in my mouth. I also had the Chipotle Peach sauce drizzled over the top which added a deliciously sweet and spicy twang to the food.
You can really tell the place is popular with long queues at lunchtime as well as all the hustle and bustle and it's really no surprise. The food is amazing and while you may queue for a while, once you get to ordering you get your food relatively quickly. I would highly recommend this place for a spot of lunch.
