I tried McDonald’s festive menu but it was one item short of a ‘celebration’

With a little over a month until Christmas, McDonald’s have released their festive menu to get everyone in the Christmas spirit, with the return of some fan favourites, as well as completely new menu items.

It comes just weeks after the new McCrispy launched, with fast food fans practically bombarded with new releases. That’s not to mention the new potato waffles and the last-minute addition of the Mighty McMuffin.

So, I’ve been back in store to check out all of the new festive offerings, which will be available until January - and there’s one item I’ll be ordering at the Drive Thru as often as I can.

First back on the menu is the ever-popular Big Tasty, with a 100 per cent beef patty, Emmental cheese, onions, tomatoes and a unique smoky flavoured sauce all nested in a freshly toasted bun. It’s delicious and my fiancé is going to be thrilled, as his favourite order is the Big Tasty with bacon - but for me, it doesn’t feel particularly Christmassy. I think it needs something a little more seasonal to be considered festive.

Even last year's Festive Stack wasn’t that festive. We need some cranberry sauce or something, Maccies.

Everyone knows the best part of your Christmas dinner is the trimmings – which is why McDonald’s have gone big on all festive pies and sides for 2022. And I’m SO here for it. The Cheese Melt Dippers are back, and they’re hands-down my favourite cheese side of the year so I’ll be ordering them by the sharebox.

These delightful bitesize camembert nuggets come in a portion of four, or a share box of 15, and they’re the most beautiful oozy, herby, festive treat. While they are meant to be served with a tangy tomato dip, mine was missing, though I didn’t much care because they’re delicious anyway.

McDonald’s apple pie has gotten a yuletide upgrade with the return of the Festive Pie - a classic hot crispy pie filled with mincemeat and custard, which is a must-have for any true mince pie lover. Sadly, that I am not, and while the pie looks and smells extremely festive, the filling just was not for me.

I try a mince pie every single year hoping maybe, one day, I’ll enjoy one - alas I never do. The custard is quite a thick consistency, too, which I found slightly off-putting. Mince pie fans are likely to love it, but I’ll stick to the suitably seasonal apple pie, which is available all year round.

One of my favourite McDonald’s hacks? Order a hot apple pie and a plain Mcflurry, then break your apple pie into the soft serve for the most incredible dessert. It’s a game changer.

Speaking of McFlurries, I was VERY excited to try out the new Celebrations McFlurry, made up of soft dairy ice cream, swirled with Maltesers clusters, Galaxy chocolate drops, Caramel pieces, Mars Chewy pieces and Twix biscuits, topped with a milk chocolate sauce.

Of course, when I placed my order, the McFlurry machine was broken. That old chestnut. So devastatingly, I’m going to have to wait to try that one.

As well as the new food items, McDonald’s festive McCafe range has been out for a couple of weeks already, so I treated myself to the Hot Chocolate Deluxe, which proved popular in 2021. The silky treat is made with a rich, chocolate syrup, topped with a swirl of cream and a chocolatey dusting, served in a Christmas themed cup. What's not to love?

The 2022 Festive Menu will be hitting restaurants across the UK and Ireland from Wednesday, November 23 for a limited six-weeks only. Will you be trying it for yourself?
