I tried Heinz vegan 'veg hoopz' and they tricked me into eating one of my five a day

It can be a real battle to get children to eat their cauliflower or clear their carrots off their plate.

When I was younger, my mum would try and mash vegetables into my mashed potatoes - which often ended up in tears.

But Heinz have come up with a way to sneak extra vegetables into little ones, without them suspecting a thing.

I was really intrigued by the Heinz Veg Hoopz, as spaghetti hoops and toast (affectionately nicknamed ‘hoops upside your bread’ by my dad) is one of my favourite working from home lunches.

And even at the age of 24, I’m guilty of not eating half as much fruit and vegetables as I should, so maybe these are set to become a real life hack.

The new veg hoops are made with 30% extra veg, making up one of your five a day. Suitable for vegans, the pasta snack includes added carrot and cauliflower, with a tomato and sweet potato sauce.

The regular Spaghetti Hoops are only suitable for vegetarians, so it’s great to see that the brand is expanding to cater to a more diverse consumer range.

I emptied my tin of hoops into a bowl and microwaved them for two and a half minutes - and while everything about them sounded great, it was the taste test that would make all the difference.

A little like the princess and the pea, I can often sense a hidden vegetable in my meal - and the same goes for fussy children. However, the Heinz veg hoopz taste exactly the same as their original counterparts.

And veg hoops are not the only new product suitable for vegans that the culinary household name have launched of late.

This month, the brand released a selection of ‘Veggiez’ sauces designed to make vegetables more appealing for plant-based eaters and flexitarians.

The five new sauces include ‘tomato and smoked paprika’, ‘chilli and miso’, ‘preserved lemon and agave’, ‘coconut and chilli’ and ‘balsamic and rosemary’.

The whole range is vegan, gluten free and free from artificial colours, flavours and preservatives.

The condiments join the existing vegan mayo and salad cream that Heinz brought out in December 2020, and the plant proteinz soup released in October 2021 - which offer not one, but two of your five a day, even better for sneaking extra veg into yours, or your little one’s diet.
