I tried Costa’s Veganuary wrap with meat-free 'meatballs'

Normally if I was going out for coffee I would opt for sweet offering to pair with it - coffee and cake just has a nice ring to it. But in the spirit of being adventurous this Veganuary I decided I would mix it up when it came to my order at Costa, trying their vegan 'meatball' wrap instead.

I was a bit sceptical at first - my last time trying a meat replacement didn’t go down too well and I wasn’t the biggest fan. The one thing I did notice when going into the cafe to get my wrap was that despite it being the month that many people try out a plant-based diet, there weren't many vegan options when it comes to the food.

Other than a vegan sausage breakfast roll there were no other savoury vegan options, while there were multiple different options for those who aren’t vegan or vegetarian. Costa has been marketing one particular item though, with its website stating: "Be kind to the planet and your taste buds this Veganuary. Tuck into our delicious veggie and vegan options, including the new Vegan Me'tball Wrap."

When you buy a savoury item such as a wrap or panini they ask if you want it hot or cold - I decided to get mine heated up. Once I had paid, I sat down and tucked into my food and I was pleasantly surprised by my first bite.

Given my scepticism I was expecting something very different from what I got - the flavours were amazing. There was a beautiful tomato sauce, more specifically a marinara sauce which would explain the warmth left in your mouth from the spices used to season it.

There were whole 'meatballs' in the wrap, which I didn’t expect but that wasn’t a problem. I do love meatballs but I’ve never tried vegan versions before, so I was definitely intrigued to see what these tasted like.

It even had whole vegan meatball in the wrap (BristolLive)

The flavour was really good individually but also they tasted really good within the sauce. The texture was a little different to that of normal meatballs but it wasn’t weird to me, like I found with the vegan bacon.

The wrap was also slightly crispy from where it had been heated up but it provided a nice mixture of textures. Overall I really enjoyed this wrap - the smell and taste really were amazing considering there was no meat or dairy and I would definitely recommend it for others to try.
