I tried Aldi's £14.99 'bramble' gin and it was the nicest I’ve ever had

Buying a bottle of gin can be pretty expensive, with some big brands costing over £25.

Aldi has seriously impressed shoppers with its £14.99 bottle of Haysmith’s Blackberry & Raspberry Bramble gin, as seen in the ‘Aldi UK Shoppers’ Facebook page. A post sharing a picture of the gin received so many comments from shoppers, they had to be turned off.

The gin is described as a ‘smooth premium gin with flavours of raspberries and blackberry’ with a 40% alcohol content. The Haysmiths gin already comes in numerous different flavours such as Rhubarb & Ginger , Strawberry & Rose and Seville Orange & Lime.

On its website, Aldi describes the Blackberry & Raspberry Bramble gin as an ‘elegantly smooth and complex taste’ with ‘tart undertones of raspberry and blackberry’ with ‘notes of juniper and a fresh fruity finish.’

I managed to get my hands on the £14.99 bottle of 70cl gin to see what all the fuss was about. Here’s what I thought:

The gin

The bottle itself looked really appealing and definitely a lot more ‘premium’ considering it was priced at £14.99. In the bottle, the gin had a gorgeous deep purple colour that looked very appetising to say the least.

I poured a decent measure into a glass and added some ice and lemon for extra flavour and coolness. Luckily the sun was shining, which made it even more appropriate to try out this popular fruity gin.

After the first sip, I definitely got the ‘tartness’ as mentioned in the product description, and it was absolutely delicious. The fruity flavours were really noticeable, which is actually quite rare, as a lot of gins can claim to be fruity, but just taste like watered down versions.

It was most certainly smooth, and worked really well with a nice fizzy tonic. One thing I really loved about this gin was the fact that it wasn’t too sweet, it was fruity, yes, but not sickly.

For those who don’t mind a slight sour tang, this gin is absolutely perfect for a spring or summer tipple. It’s got such a refreshing fruit flavour and it’s so easy to drink.

My verdict

The gin tastes a lot more expensive than it actually is, and that’s why Aldi has seriously impressed shoppers (me included) with this terrific gin. The flavour is spot on too, and makes for a perfect summery beverage.

There’s not one flaw about this gin. It’s easy to drink, it tastes great and it’s just the right amount of sweet and sour. I’ll be sure to purchase all the other flavours, since I was so thoroughly impressed with this one.
