Deep fried Mars Bars have been a beloved treat in Scotland for over thirty years. Lots of people each day wander into chippies across the country to get their hands on one of these delightfully melt-in-your-mouth treats. And as Easter nudges closer, lots of us can't resist the chocolatey sensations.
But a chippy in Edinburgh is offering something a bit different this year as it serves up a deep fried Creme Egg.
At Easter time there is not much that beats a Creme Egg with their richer than rich centres and the thick chocolatey shells which melt in your mouth.
So I decided to go and try one of these tasty treats to see whether it would live up to the pinnacle of the deep fried Mars bar and here is what I thought about it.
I have had a deep fried Mars bar before and I thought it was a wonderful treat, so I was relly curious to see if the Creme Egg version would be able to get anywhere near its standard, and I was not disappointed.
The taste
I first had to find somewhere that does them and thankfully found a chippy in Edinburgh called Clam Shell on the Royal Mile.
This chippy offers a vast number of fried chocolate goodies but I was focused on the Creme Egg for this visit.
I was served up with some ice cream which was a great treat and overall the dish looked really tasty so I couldn't wait to try it.
As soon as you bite into it, the first thing that hits you is the melted chocolate which is then closely followed by a rich and gooey texture which is the creme egg centre.
The chocolate melts down completely in your mouth leaving you with the creamy texture and, as it is all heated up, it is such a delightful taste.
With each bite I liked this deep fried creme egg more and more as the contrast between the chocolatey shell and the soft and gooey centre leaves you feeling satisfied.
The heat of the creme egg with the coldness of the ice cream makes for a brilliant taste in the mouth.
On top of this all was the batter which really adds to the overall flavour. Rather than just being an addition, the batter round the outside really compliments the gooey interior as it is nice and crunchy.
I was concerned that the batter would not add anything to the dish and instead would just be there for the sake of it, but I shouldn't have been concerned as everything was put together really well.
The Verdict
So, overall I thought the deep fried creme egg was a delightful dish with its gooey and warm interior and its crispy batter exterior.
In addition, I would recommend the ice cream if you try the dish as the contrast between the hot and the cold really puts this treat on another level.
Therefore, if you find yourself walking past a chippy and you see an advert for deep fried creme eggs as Easter draws in, then be sure to stop in as they definitely do not disappoint.
