I’ve repeatedly been to the GP over back pain for the last ten years and despite numerous x-rays and MRI scans nothing wrong can be found and little can be done to help.Diagnosed with chronic back pain, I’ve tried acupuncture, physiotherapy and even gave reiki a go - though, no surprises that that one didn’t work.
There are a few things I have found to help me manage my pain condition, including gentle exercise and weight training, yoga stretches, a weighted blanket and now, a handheld massage gun .

I tried out the Renpho handheld back massager , and when I went to look at the price, I was stunned at how affordable it was. At this point, I’ll pay almost any amount of money for something to relieve me of my aches, so to discover it was only £36.99 I was thrilled.
Back massages can cost anywhere from £25-45 in my experience, with acupuncture costing a similar amount - both of which only offer temporary relief.
And while the Renpho massager will offer a temporary pain blocking option, the fact you can keep the device and use it when needed is a real life-saver. The device was really easy to set up as it comes pretty much ready to use. There is a stand on which to charge it for around two and a half hours before use, with space to store two of the four additional interchangeable heads.
Each one has a slightly different purpose, with the round ball - which comes pre-attached - and the one-point head being ideal for firm deep tissue massages. It’s particularly effective for kneading out knots in the muscles and is best used on the shoulders, back, lower back and soles of the feet.

I’ve loved using it to work the knots out of my shoulders, and the cordless design with a long ergonomic handle makes it easy to reach the areas you need to, without twisting awkwardly and causing further damage.
Other attachments include a curved head which works well on arms and legs, with a three-point rubber coated head offering a softer massage for joint areas like the knees and ankles.
Finally, there’s a three-intensive rubber coated head that offers relief on a larger surface area to help loosen tight and stiff muscles.

As well as the different heads, there are also five modes built into the device, pulsating at different rhythms, however I do prefer the constant option, with the choice to decrease or increase the massage power with the + and - buttons on the handle.
You’d expect the massager to hurt to some degree, but it doesn’t at all. In fact, its percussion technology - which offers up to 3,600 vibrations a minute - is extremely soothing and effective in just 20 minutes.
The device automatically stops after 20 minutes to avoid overheating, with the battery lasting around 140 minutes in total.
As a family of gym-goers, me, my mum and dad have all been fighting over who gets to use it first.
