A roast dinner is one of the nation’s favourite meal. If you were going out for one in a restaurant or pub, you would be looking at paying close to £10 at a minimum, especially if you want one on a Sunday.
But Santiago's in the bus station offers the chance to have a midweek roast for just £5 a plate, or you could get a lasagne for the same price. To see what you get for your money, I decided I would head down there and try this super-cheap meal.
On entering the café, I went straight up to the counter to order my food. They asked if I wanted to add chips to my dish, which seemed like a confusing addition to the traditional dish, so I declined.

It only took them five minutes to bring out my meal. I wasn’t expecting the portion to be a massive size, and I was right, but again you pay £5 for the meal. The dish consisted of a whole chicken leg, three potatoes, a piece of broccoli, four carrots and a decent-sized pot of gravy.

The taste of everything was good and I finished everything. The chicken was lovely and well cooked and the amount you get was pretty good - especially considering the price you pay in the supermarkets. The carrots were very sweet, almost as if they had been honey-glazed, which was really nice. The same could be said about the potatoes, they had a beautiful flavour but I wouldn’t class them as roast potatoes due to a lack of crunch.
I feel that there were only two things on the plate that I didn’t like too much, which was the broccoli and the gravy. One bit of broccoli I had was far too chewy, almost as if it was nearly cooked but not quite. And the gravy was really thin and almost watery, but like with everything else it was well-flavoured and tasted really good on the food.
Overall, the plate you get for £5 isn’t bad. The amount of chicken you get considering its cost in the current climate is really good. I wouldn’t claim it’s the best roast I’ve ever had given that two items on the plate were inedible, so I left with a confused view of the venue - it was good and bad.
