Perhaps more than any other Boston Celtics great before or since, The Hick From French Lick (as Larry Bird was lovingly called as a nickname) could get in his opponent’s head with trash talk. But Larry Legend often played the long game as well, his most devastating trash talk simply being the Indiana State alum telling the poor soul tasked with guarding him that tilt exactly how he was going to get scored on by Bird.
That by itself can be a dangerous game to play with an opponent as today’s Dillon Brooks can tell you from how his taunts of LeBron James ended up going. But as we alluded, Bird delivered on his promises with frightening consistency — and were topped off with a brutal “I told you so” once he did.
