Choosing a name for your newborn is one of life's most difficult decisions. Every parent wants a moniker that feels special and unique to their child - but anything too unusual can lead to criticism from judgmental family members, or even bullying at school.
One mum has admitted that her son's name hasn't gone down as well as she'd hoped, as she resents that everyone struggles to pronounce it.
Australian mum-of-two Eli took to TikTok to open up about her baby name issue, sharing her frustration that nobody seems to understand her son Seth's moniker. The name Seth seems easy to pronounce and far from unusual for us Brits - but Eli hadn't anticipated that Australians would struggle with it.
Sharing her thoughts in a candid video, Eli, who posts under the handle @tinok_co, explained: "It's not that I regret the name that I chose for my child, but I thought I chose a name that was short, international and easy to pronounce".
"It turns out I was wrong. The name I chose is not popular in Australia".
Frustrated by the blunder, the mum added: "My son's name is Seth and unless I say Seth like Seth Rogen, no one knows what I'm saying."
Instead of pronouncing it correctly, people call Eli's son 'Seeth' or 'Steph', much to the amusement of the mum who was not expecting people to have an issue with it.
People flocked to the comments section on Eli's TikTok video to share their thoughts, with one mum admitting that she's had the same issue: "Haha I knew the name before you said it. Same same my Seth has had so many issues with his name".
Other Aussies were confused by Eli's claims, as one wrote: "As an Australian everyone knows Seth and it’s very popular and basic".
The mum replied to this commenter, explaining: "That's what I also thought but it hasn't been easy".
"I named my girl Coraline thinking no issues will come of it just to get 'Korra-Lean' every damn time," another TikToker shared, proving that Eli isn't the only one having issues with her baby's name.
It turns out that Australians aren't the only people who struggle with the name Seth, as one woman claimed that it's also a tough name to pronounce for the French.
She wrote: "Seth was a problem in Belgium as the French struggle with the th. He was set - which sounds like sept the French number for 7!"
