'I thought I'd look silly in cargo pants but New Look's £26 pair are the comfiest trousers I've worn'

Cargo trousers have certainly increased in popularity since the rise of Y2K fashion - but I wanted to know if a pair would suit me.

I'll be honest, I was a little dubious when I saw that a recent pair of New Look £26 cargo trousers were proving popular with shoppers. Being the ripe old age of 27, I was under the impression that a pair of cargo trousers may look a little silly on me.

My fashion sense has certainly changed since I was in my early 20s, and these days, I usually opt for whatever I feel comfortable in. After seeing New Look shoppers raving about the trousers on Instagram, I thought I'd give them a go.

I often wear my trusted pair of Levi's jeans on a regular basis, but I really wanted to find another versatile pair of trousers that offered the same comfort. After all, there's only so many times I can wear my Levi's, and I've basically been wearing them to death since I got them.

I took a trip to New Look in Liverpool ONE and was shocked to see that there were a fair few cargo trousers left on the rack. A lot of the black ones had gone, but there were still quite a lot of coloured options still available like the camel and cream pair.

On the New Look website, the full product description reads: "Girls. Equal parts cool and comfy, these black cargo trousers are a wardrobe must-have. Made in a more sustainable way, they provide that feel-good factor too."

The trousers

Overall, I was pleasantly surprised when I slipped into these cargo trousers. I did end up sizing up because my usual size 12 wasn't available, and the 14 actually fit me quite well.

I know sizing in New Look can be a bit iffy, so if you wanted to feel extra comfortable, I'd definitely size up. The one aspect that stood out to me the most about these trousers though, was the material.

The trousers were so soft against my legs and incredibly lightweight, making them a great option for spring and early summer. I was a little worried that the trousers would look and feel a bit heavy, like some cargo trousers can, but these were as light as a feather.

I'd actually go as far to say that these were one of the comfiest pairs of trousers that I'd ever worn, purely because of their sheer softness. I had no idea that such a fashionable item of clothing could end up being comfy too, so I was really impressed with that.

I'm the type of person who will only wear comfortable trousers, because I've spent so much time when growing up squeezing into uncomfortable items of clothing all in the name of fashion. I can quite honestly say that I'd wear these cargo trousers, like my Levi's, to absolute death - because they really were very comfortable.

In terms of colouring, I was really glad that I chose the black shade. As nice as the cream and beige cargo trousers were, I felt like the black ones were so versatile.

My only criticism would be that because the cargo trousers had such a wide leg, they ended up looking pretty long on me, and I'm 5ft 3in. If I wanted to wear these trousers with trainers, I'd probably have to get them turned up by my mum (which is often the case with most trousers to be honest).

The verdict

I was super impressed with the quality and feel of these trousers, and didn't think they looked too bad either! If you're wanting a thicker, stiffer cargo trouser, these New Look ones might not be for you - but I personally loved them.

They flowed nicely without being too flimsy, and looked effortlessly cool in the process. Although I was wearing a tighter cropped top when trying them on, I do think that these trousers would look better with a hoodie or oversized t-shirt to really finish the look.

My only criticism would be that they were quite long, but most trousers are for me. As a whole, I loved the elasticated waist because it made the trousers much more comfortable and actually breathable, and the lightweight material too.
