Going into the international break, you’re thinking it is going to be a quiet period. But that never seems to be the case as an Evertonian. News of a potential financial breach came out on Friday, and it’s something that was probably in the back of people’s minds.
There were reports last season of the Premier League looking at our accounts and we thought we were in the clear, but they are now wanting to have another look. It gives us plenty to be concerned about and ties into why fans have been voicing their frustration at the way in which the club is being run. It backs up that something needs to change because we can’t carry on this way. Whether it is the fault of the owner or board members, the club hasn’t been managed in the right way and it is now obvious to see where we have been failing as a football club.
We don’t want to be able to ignore what is going on, we have to take action. We have been waiting for board changes to happen and these are distractions we don’t need in the current situation we are in. Sean Dyche asked the fans to back the players, which they have done, but they are getting frustrated by the lack of transparency of those upstairs.

We need assurances the club will be run more efficiently, with better decisions on and off the field. Of course Moshiri wants to come to a club and make it successful, but what we are seeing right now is far from that. As fans, we thought Moshiri was the missing piece. We didn’t have the money to compete with the top teams before he came, but we have over the last six or seven years and we’ve failed miserably in that department. If that was any other business in any other field, changes would have happened far sooner than you are seeing right now at Everton.
The potential financial breach is also something that will be spoken about in the changing room. As a former player, I know off-field matters can be unsettling.
I was at Manchester City for two separate takeovers, which saw the club start splashing the cash. As players, we were thinking ‘this doesn’t seem right’. Having said that, Sean Dyche won’t let the group switch off and the current players can’t use that as an excuse if they put in bad performances. What concerns me is which players will be looking at Everton and thinking ‘I want to sign for them’. There are too many question marks over us right now and which type of player can we attract when we have outside noise from upstairs?
Recruitment is the most difficult part of football. It is hard to tick every box, but I think we’ve been quite lazy with that. We have been selling the dream to players and taking the salesman approach with our football club, which shows you where we are. If you are successful as a club, you don’t need to do a sales pitch. Players probably feel underwhelmed by their experience at the club and a lot of managers have even come out discussing what they were promised and what happens are two different things.
