Kyle Walker says Manchester City’s Premier League rivalry with Liverpool in recent years is the best there has ever been in terms of on-pitch quality.
The Blues have pipped the Reds to the title by a point on two occasions with Pep Guardiola often finishing with the upper hand over Jurgen Klopp during their respective tenures. Only in 2020 did Liverpool outrump City, who have won four titles in the past five years.
Both teams have pushed each other to the wire and have often narrowed the pool of title contenders down to just the two of them due to their excelling on-field standards. It’s now commonplace for at least one of City and Liverpool to exceed 90 points in a single season, with both achieving the feat in 2018/19 and last season.

Walker has played in 11 clashes between the two clubs and has come out on the winning side four times with four draws. The England defender, who has not long returned from the Qatar World Cup, was asked if it was the greatest rivalry in terms of knuckle-to-knuckle intensity by BT Sport’s Premier League Storybook.
“I think it is in terms of the standard of football,” he said. “That’s no disrespect to the Arsenal team that was fantastic or the Manchester United team that was fantastic and won numerous leagues.
“I think the football and the standard of football and the standard of players coming to the league now is fantastic. It’s fantastic for the neutrals, do I wish we ran away with it every year? Of course I do, but I think it’s fantastic for the English Premier League.”
Walker has only played eight games for City this season due to injury, and missed the 1-0 loss to Liverpool at Anfield in October. The Blues face Klopp and co. in their first game back from the World Cup break, the pair meeting in the League Cup on December 22.
