I tasted jam doughnuts from Asda, Aldi, Tesco, Morrisons and more - and one was perfect

When it comes to sweet treats, sometimes you just can't beat a classic - and jam doughnuts are still one of the all-time favourites.

Most supermarkets offer their own take on jam doughnuts in their bakery section, with different prices depending on where you shop. Of course, the only way to determine once and for all who has the best ones is to taste test them from seven of the most popular shops including Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda, Aldi and Morrisons - and reporter Dayna Farrington from BirminghamLive took on the brave task with her family.

There was a surprising amount of difference between them, with the reviewer saying she "wouldn't hesitate" to buy the doughnuts from four of the supermarkets again but adding that she would "definitely avoid" three others. Here's how each supermarket did in a taste test from worst to best.

Aldi - 0/5

Price: £1.25 for four (reduced to 87p)

Aldi's jam doughnuts unfortunately fared the worst of all in the taste test, even though their original price was among the most expensive. "It didn't taste sweet at all - and had more of a bread-like texture," the reviewer said. "Maybe it was because they were nearing their expiry date, but we were left disappointed."

Lidl - 1/5

Price: 35p for one

The reviewer's local Lidl only sold jam doughnuts individually at 35p a pop, making them the most expensive out of all the supermarkets - and while they were much bigger than the others and looked delicious, these ones fell down on taste. "The jam was severely lacking - it also tasted really sour which ruined the doughnut for us," the taste testers found.

Co-Op - 2/5

Price: £1.25 for four

The Co-Op was one of the most expensive shops per doughnut - and unfortunately the higher price tag didn't result better quality, according to the reviewer. The dough "felt tougher than all the others" in the taste test, while the jam inside was found to be "rather tasteless".

Tesco - 3/5

Price: £1 for five

Unfortunately the reviewer's local Tesco was all sold out of jam doughnuts, so she bought sugar ring doughnuts instead as the closest thing available. "The dough was soft and fluffy, very sweet and there was a good amount of sugar," was the verdict - but the disappointment at not getting to try a jam doughnut knocked a couple of points off the overall score.

Sainsbury's - 4/5

Price: £1 for five

With the same price tag as Tesco and Asda, Sainsbury's jam doughnuts were instantly in the running for favourite with their "soft and tasty" dough and impressive amount of jam packed into the centre. "It was lovely and sweet - and also very generous with the sugar," the reviewer said.

Asda - 4/5

Price: £1 for five

Asda also impressed with its jam doughnut offering, with a "lovely fluffy consistency" to the dough and plenty of sugar scattered on top. The reviewer added: "We found the jam to be really sweet and had a lovely strawberry taste."

Morrisons - 5/5

Price: 85p for five

The cheapest option of all seven supermarkets was also the firm favourite, with Morrisons earning full marks all round for its delicious doughnuts. "The dough was the perfect consistency, light, fluffy and sweet. There was also just the right amount of jam inside and sugar sprayed on top," the reviewer said.

Overall

Tesco 3/5

Sainsbury's 4/5

Co-op 2/5

Asda 4/5

Lidl 1/5

Aldi 0/5

Morrisons 5/5

We were surprised how different a doughnut could taste. Morrisons was a overwhelming winner and had the perfect doughnut cracked. Plus they were just 85p for a bag of five making it great value for money.

Sainsbury's and Asda came a joint second - and were very tasty. Closely followed by Tesco in third place. We wouldn't hesitate buying any of them again.

However we would definitely avoid Aldi, Lidl and Co-op. They just didn't hit the spot with us.

Which is your favourite supermarket doughnut? And, can you eat a whole one without licking your lips?
